"C'mon lemme try it one last time." I pleaded. I looked down around me to see the failed transmutation circle at my feet.
"NO, Shane. You've been going at this all day. Face it, you may not be able to be an alchemist." My teacher said.
"NO" I yelled "You said you never fail until you stop trying so I WON'T stop trying!"
My teacher sighed, "You have a point there. I'll go in and make supper you come in whenever."
"OKAY" I cried gleefully.
Ok, Shane, you've got this. Just like Teach showed you.
I calmly began to draw another transmutation circle. All I wanted to do was to make something to prove to teacher that I wasn't a failure and that I could do this. I visualized what I wanted in my head and calmly pushed my palms together in a praying position. I could feel the air around me fill with electricity and I thrust my hands onto the edge of the transmutation circle. I could see green light through my closed eyes and I felt cold air rush on my face. Slowly it calmed down. I opened my eyes and could see that there was something sitting in the middle of my transmutation circle. The smoke slowly cleared and I could see a small figurine of my teacher sitting in the middle of the circle."TEACHER!!! TEACHER COME QUICK!!!" I cried excitedly.
I can't believe I actually transmuted something
Teacher rushed outside and gasped when she saw what I had created.
"YOU DID IT, SHANE!" Teacher cried "YOU ACTUALLY DID IT."
She rushed over to me and gave me a huge hug. She brushed brown hair out of my face and tilted my chin up.
"Tomorrow we go to Central. I promised someone that when you transmuted something that you could meet them. It's time" Teacher said smiling
"WHO?!!!" I cried excitedly "IS IT THE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST?? OR THE FLAME ALCHEMIST??"
"I guess you'll have to wait for tomorrow." Teacher said smiling "You can call this an early 17th birthday present."
"But teacher my birthday IS tomorrow" I laughed
"Oh is it? I completely forgot" She smiled "Now come on, you've got a big day ahead of you tomorrow"She helped me up to my feet and we walked together towards the house. I hurried up and ate supper then ran up to bed. I knew I wouldn't get a wink of sleep that night, but that didn't bother me. At about 4am I got up to go to the bathroom. I turned on the light and looked in the mirror. My curly brown hair was a mess, my blue eyes were green, my tan skin looked a bit pale, my blue eyes were GREEN!?!?!! I involuntarily screamed which made teacher come running. My eyes were locked on my reflection.
"SHANE?!" Teacher yelled.
"Teach... " I asked slowly turning to her "What's wrong with my eyes..?"
Teacher gasped "Oh my... Shane this is important, what color light did you see when you transmuted that figurine?"
"A bright green" I said my voice wavering a little. "Why?"
"Oh my. Shane I knew you were special, but I didn't think you were THIS special."
"Teacher, what's wrong with my eyes?" I asked panic creeping into my voice.
"I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that your alchemy is a special kind." Teacher replied slowly.
"Teacher, why do my eyes hurt? Why was my transmutation energy green? What's wrong with me?"
" I don't know" She cried. "C'mon grab your bags, we're heading to central early"
"But teacher i don't think trains go this late." I said worriedly
"Military trains do, now c'mon"
"Uh ok" I said scared "Wait MILITARY?!"
"I'll explain on the train, now let's go"
We hurried over to the train station where a train was waiting, teacher lead me back a few cars to a normal passenger car. We sat down across from each over and I kept shaking out of fear, panic, and nerves. The number of questions and the amount of fear that was in my head was enough to stop a freight train.
"OK, so I'm not a normal alchemy teacher, Shane."
"I noticed"
"Let me continue. Now, I've been a state alchemist for quite some time. After the Flame Alchemist became Fühur I decided I might try to follow in someone's footsteps. Many alchemists such as the Flame, Fullmetal, and many others have been assigned students who the state believes have great potential. Now it's time you know the truth. My name isn't really Carrie. It's Riza Hawkeye."
"WAIT WHAT?! YOU WORKED WITH FULLMETAL AND THE FLAME ALCHEMIST?!"
"Please let me continue," Riza laughed "Yes I do work with Edward and Alphonse Elric as well as Roy Mustang, that's who I was going to surprise you with meeting tomorrow. Fullmetal and Mustang have been wanting to train an alchemist for some time and I thought you'd be the perfect one for them to teach. You are now no longer my student. You are now Fullmetal and Flame's student."
"Wait... This isn't some kind of sick 17th birthday joke is it?" I asked looking at Riza suspiciously.
"No it is not. You can ask them yourself" Riza said with a laugh.
"But we're not.." I was interrupted by a "HI" from behind me.
I jumped a little and looked to see who it was. It was the Fullmetal Alchemist and his brother Alphonse.
"OK now this definitely is a dream" I said shakily "You" I said pointing at Ed and Al "Live in Central city in a hotel. Heaven knows why you just don't get an apartment ."
Ed laughed "I'm not sure why we haven't gotten an apartment yet. But anyway, HI I'm Edward Elric otherwise known as the Fullmetal Alchemist and this is my brother.."
"Alphonse" We said in unison
"I know who you are" I said quietly, then gasped "Oh my how rude of me, please sit down, I'm Shane Lichman."
Ed and Al both laughed and sat down. Ed next to me and Al next to Riza.
"So we hear you wanna study alchemy" Edward said "It's dangerous being a state Alchemist I'll just say it now."
"I'm aware" I said still looking down
"Why are you looking down?" Al asked
"Well.. you see. Today was the first time I did a successful transmutation and something with the energy did something to my eyes. You see they used to be blue and now they're... Well green."
"That's odd. I've never heard of an Alchemist's energy doing something like that."
"Nor have I" Riza added.
"That's no reason to look down" Al said politely.
Slowly I lifted my head up and both boys gasped.
"Your eyes aren't just green, they're changing colors. Blue, purple, red, black, hazel, yellow." Riza said alarmed
"What the hell?" Ed said his eyes wide with a mix of shock and wonder.
I stood up shakily "E-excuse me" I stammered.
If the Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't know what's going on maybe no one knows.
"Wait!" Ed grabbed my arm "What color was the transmutation energy?"
"Green"
"Bright or dark, it's important" Edward said
"Bright green." I sighed
"Holy..." Ed gasped "You're one of the most talented alchemists out there!"
"WHAT?" I asked. My head was swimming Me? A talented alchemist? That's not right.
"Sit down, please" Ed asked
I sat down legs shaky.
Ed sighed then explained "Green transmutation energy was passed down by the creator of alchemy. After that different types of alchemy were split. The type I use has blue transmutation energy is more attuned with the energy of the Earth. Bright green is the most powerful. You can transmute anything EVEN HUMAN LIFE. That green is more attuned with the universe so you can do limitless things in alchemy. No wonder Riza said you're gifted and that must explain why your eyes are changing color."
"Me? Powerful? I can hardly transmutate a figurine let alone a sword or a person." I laughed.
"You need to be trained, of course, and that's where l Mustang and I come in. We can teach you how to become an alchemist and how to tap into your abilities." Fullmetal smiled, "So tell me about yourself."
"Well, uhm, my name is Shane Lichman, I'm 17 as of today, I don't have any parents or siblings, and I've been living with Ms. Riza for the past year."
"Happy birthday!" Al and Ed said in unison.
"Thank you" I smiled I can't believe that my alchemy heros just told me happy birthday!!
"Well what type of things do you like, Shane?" Alphonse asked.
"Uhm, singing, drawing, alchemy, reading. That's the bulk of it."
"Singing, huh?" Ed asked "Are you any good?"
"Well uhm you see I've never sang in front of anyone before so..." I trailed off.
"Not much of a people person, huh?" Ed asked.
"Nuh uh." I responded.
Ed laughed "Good thing I am!"
"You're also a hot head and get mad at anyone who makes a comment about your height." I laughed
"Tis true" Ed smiled.
We all sat back and I listened to the stories that Ed, Al and Riza told. It was a good way to learn a lot about your heros and soon to be your brothers in arms.
