Aislyn pulled herself onto the beach and opened her mouth to let a turret of water cascade out. She hungrily gulped down a few deep breaths of the stuffy, desert air.
She blinked away the fine lining coating her eyes and turned back to the sea; holding up her hands to make some gestures at the creature, who's scaly head disappeared beneath the surface moments later.
Aislyn turned away from the water to observe the surroundings behind her. Dunes rose all around her and the moon cast an eerie glow that reflected off of the lapping waves. Even though it was late at night, Aislyn could still feel the heat radiating from the sand under her feet. Squinting her eyes, she could see some light dazzling in the distance.
"Ding, ding, ding," she muttered, throwing her bag over a shoulder.
Ignoring the discomfort of her sopping wet suit filled chafing against her, Aislyn began to walk towards civilisation, wringing out her cape as she went. Going over a mental checklist, she began to count off her weapons strapped across her body: daggers, throwing knives, shurikens... check.
As she eventually neared the first stone building, Aislyn made sure to put on her mask and pull her hood over her head. Checking to see that there was no one was watching her she darted over to the little building that only stood a couple of feet taller than herself, and pulled herself onto the roof.
Crouching down low, she removed her bag and left it tucked away in a corner.
Next, she took off her boots and emptied the sand, grumbling under her breath.
After several minutes of disgruntled complaints and extraction of sand from other areas, Aislyn looked over to the direction of the market where, despite the late hour, it was still bustling with people. Eyes narrowing in on a man covered head to toe in exotic robes, who was noticeably paler and larger than the rest of the merchants, she smiled.
She had found her target.
Drawing her eyes away from the man, she averted her gaze to the next building that was separated by a mere few feet.
Once again quickly glancing to make sure the coast was clear, Aislyn stood up and went to the furthest side of the building, tapping her foot against the wooden roof beneath her, grimacing at the flimsy wood. Huffing out an annoyed sigh, she figured it would have to make do.
"One. Two. Three."
Aislyn burst into a run and in a few short paces, she leapt onto the next roof. And the next. And the next. And the next.
When she reached the first building that stood behind one of the larger stalls she dropped after her jump and rolled across the roof, quickly reaching down to snatch a red and gold embroidered cloak and a matching handkerchief.
She tugged the cloak over her black one and took off her mask, stuffing it into one of the many pockets of her suit, and replaced it by tying the handkerchief around her mouth.
She drew the hood up over her head carefully ensuring that her braided hair was hidden from view and that her black eyes were veiled in shadow. Quickly risking a peer over the edge of the ledge, she refocused her gaze on her target and noted that he was four stalls away.
Gratefully she also noted that his stall was one of the few with a covering.
Making quick work of jumping across the last few buildings, Aislyn finally reached her destination and peeped over the edge. Seeing that her target was not occupied, she prepared herself to pounce. Silently throwing one leg over the ledge, then the other, she braced her hands on the walls and pushed off, landing noiselessly on the balls of her feet. Drawing a small knife from the folds of her cloak, she dashed forward and thrust it against his side, hard enough for the man to suck in a breath but not hard enough to pierce his skin.
