"okay class, it's that time of the year again." the teacher spoke, a knowing smirk covering her face of pure evil.
all of the students groaned, the loudest being calum. pete left the class. patrick ran after him, yelling a "uh, i'll get him." to the teacher, who was glaring at the door after they left, knowing they wouldn't come back.
calum knew they would come back, though. he knew that at least patrick would come back. he's not really the type to skip classes, he would rather jump off of a bridge. which, in fact, was exactly what calum wanted to do in this moment, project in mind.
the teacher cleared her throat, attempting to silence the yells of protest coming from her non-enthusiastic students. "class, i've changed it up this year, you can-"
the door banged open showing a triumphant patrick and an angry looking pete. pete stomped over to his seat, throwing his legs on top of his desk, giving the teacher a trying look. patrick just went and sat down next to pete.
the teacher sighed. "as i was saying," she sent a glare towards pete and patrick as she spoke. "i've changed up the rules this year. now you can do the project with a partner, but make sure you share the work.
"i'm giving each partner a slip to evaluate their partner's work ethic and effort. fail that, you fail the assignment. your partner won't fail, though. just do it. i shouldn't have to explain the project you've all done it enough. just different topics."
she made a stack of 20 page packets in the middle of her desk, waving her hand to give the signal that they were allowed to make pairs and start their project.
"you get the rest of class to work on it." she said, then opened up a 'Home' magazine and began reading, and the students were no longer under the watchful eye of a teacher.
'well. i'm screwed.' calum thought, knowing very well that pete and patrick would want to work together. and he knew from luke that he couldn't just wish for the project to be done. and he can't mess with love. so he didn't dare try to wish for patrick to be his partner.
calum looked over to the two desks next to him, noticing pete and patrick with a packet talking about what to do. patrick shot him a sympathetic look.
calum smiled a bit and shrugged, to show that he was fine and would find a partner. as if. patrick nodded and smiled at him one last time before turning back to pete.
a gentle tap on his shoulder snapped calum out of his thoughts. calum turned around sharply, to find a scared looking ashton, who's lips were trembling. calum immediately softened, and looked at ashton expectantly, waiting for him to say something.
"h-hi, c-calum. can i b-be your p-partner?"
a smile overtook calum's face, but he quickly covered it up with a neutral expression. "sure." he said, gesturing to the seat next to him that used to be occupied by patrick.
ashton smiled, quickly sitting down. calum reluctantly peeled himself out of his seat and made his way over to the teacher's desk, plucking a packet from the stack, that was widdling down, before sitting back down next ashton.
he turned himself so that his knees were pointing directly towards the other boy, ashton doing the same afterwards.
"uh, c-calum, can y-you explain the p-project t-to me?" ashton asked with a stutter that calum hadn't noticed until now, even though it was always there.
"yeah. let me ask patrick."
