Torris Corozad is perhaps the most talented weapons expert and swordsmith that her country has ever seen. Orphaned from a young age, she is content to hide out with her small band of outcasts and vagabonds in an abandoned monastery that lies in a dark forest on the border between two rival countries. She and her followers generally strive to avoid trouble of all sorts, including the religious and political civil wars that have been threatening to destroy her society as she knows it.
When the Warrior-King of the neighboring land of Ebellum is assassinated, the arrow that impaled his brain like a suckled pig on a spitroast is identified to have been masterfully crafted by Torris. Suspicious eyes turn westward. An inquirer from the King's court is sent to question her, but Kellen Tarr, a renowned brute and killer, is determined to get to her first.
As Torris and Kellen forge a tenuous bond, each thinks they will use the other to get what they want most: for Torris, money, and for Kellen, the crown. Controversy abounds, as tensions in Ebellum and the surrounding nations run high. With no surviving heir, the Warchief has left behind no legacy, and virtually limitless power in the form of the throne is up for grabs. Thieves, pirates, and sorcerers all swarm to Ebellum's capital city of Duinthral to demonstrate their wealth and power, and make bids for the crown. The only way Kellen believes he has a claim to it is by the ultimate display of power: destroying the monster known only as "the Shapeless" that has been plagueing their world for centuries. However, in order to defeat it, he will need Torris's help. Torris, on the other hand, has a completely separate agenda; one she hopes to accomplish before Kellen catches on and tries to stop her.
