The steady beeping of the machine fills the room.
The man's loved ones are strewn about the room, barely moving.
He's been in that bed for months; seven months to be exact.
The doctors had called his family and friends to tell them there had been more brain activity than recently.
Not a day after they received the call, they were all crowded in the single-bed hospital room.
A voice rang out in the quiet of the room, the sound radiating from the doorway. It was the doctor politely asking the guests to leave the room while they checked the patient.
The people obliged, leaving the room quickly and quietly.
Dr. Shiznits was alone with his patient. He looked over the odds and took this as a moment to be honest. This patient wasn't going to make it. At least it would be peaceful.
He had to tell the family that they were only prolonging the inevitable. He told one of the nurses to prepare the paperwork for him to pull the cord. He asked for the parents to come in for a private discussion.
"I think it's time to think about what to do next." He starts.
"What do you mean? You said that there was more activity. That's good, isn't it?" The mother sounded hopeful.
"It would be in most cases. Ma'am, your son's condition has remained the same for seven months now. I'm sorry, but I believe it is time for everyone to say their goodbyes. I can give you time to think it over." He was going to exit when the Toby's father spoke.
"We should do it. I don't like seeing my boy like this. Let's do it." The soft sobs escaped his wife. The doctor turned and nodded.
"I'll let you all say goodbye as I prepare the paperwork." He exited the room and moments later, the room was filled once again by the loved ones.
Simple goodbyes were spoken all around. Sad and touching stories passed around the small room. His father was the last to say goodbye.
"I remember when your mother and I found out we were expecting you. I remember when you would cry all night. I remember when you would come home from school. You were always so excited. You were such a little punk, but you were my punk. Our punk. I know I was tough on you. I'm a dad, that's what I do. But, I just want you to know something. I want you to know that even when I was hard on you, yelled at you, or made you mad at me for, well being myself, I loved you, Toby. I never understood your computer stuff. Or the online video thing you do. Uh, YouTube, I think. Anyway, son I need you to realize that I'm very proud of you. You are very bright, charming and a great young man. I love you Toby. We'll see you later kid." A tear shed as his farther finished his goodbye.
The doctor came back in the room and announced that these were the final minutes. Everyone except the parents exited the room.
The machines were turned off and the heart monitor's line went flat.
It was the end of Toby Joe Turner.
