"Great,"I groaned, cringing at the growing bruise beneath my eye. What am I supposed to tell Phil?
Gently prodding the swollen flesh, I fixed my fringe in the bathroom mirror and turned on the cold water to gingerly clean the dried blood from my nose and other small cuts on my face. They weren't deep, but they still stung.
When done, I dried my face and peeked out into the hall to make sure no one was around before darting down the hall to my classroom. Before I entered, I messed my hair in a way that it covered the entire left side of my face and the bruise. My classmates stared as I took the walk of shame to my desk near the center of the room and sat down. My face was heating up as the stares got more intense and people started whispering, but I only payed attention to the person directly on my right, Phil.
"Are you alright, Dan?" his deep voice whispered. "You're looking both pale and pink right now."
I attempted a smile, but I knew he knew it was fake. "Don't worry about it; I'll be fine," I responded, only turning my head slightly so he wouldn't see the shining and swollen skin.
Like I had guessed he would, he saw right through my facade."Dan! Your lip is swollen and split! What happened?" he questioned.
"Is it?" I brought my hand up to my lips to find that, sure enough, my lip was split and there was blood dribbling down my chin. How had I not noticed? "Oh."
"You should probably take your lip rings out in case the swelling gets too severe. Here, let me clear up the blood on your chin." He used a cloth he must've had with him to wipe off my chin and pushed my hair back into its proper position on my head.
He gasped and I sighed. Even though I love Phil, he can get overprotective of me sometimes. This protective side started to show in his next words.
"Who did this, Dan? And don't tell me you ran into a pole. There's no way a pole could cause this much damage. Look, even your flower crown is rumpled and your jumper is dirty," he mumbled, sounding angry. During his rant, he had grabbed my flower crown from my head and began to straighten the petals and readjust the stems. I now had my lip rings removed and was taking out my left nose stud and septum piercing.
"Don't worry about it, Phil," I said, slightly irritated. "I don't want you to get involved."
"I want to get involved, Dan! Nobody deserves to be bullied; especially you."
"Phil, Dan, do you have something you want to share with the class?"
Our heads whipped to the front of the room where the teacher stood. I was about to say no, Miss, we're sorry, but Phil decide to say instead, "Yes, ma'am, can I take Dan to the nurse? He ran into a pole and his nose is bleeding."
I gave Phil a dirty look, knowing he had no intention to take me to the nurse's office.
"Oh, of course, make sure he gets better soon," she replied."Thank you, miss." Sometimes Phil's loving and protective nature bothered me to no end.
We left the class quickly, grabbing my pastel pink bag and his galaxy backpack.
"Where are you taking me, Phil?"
"I'm taking you back to my place because one, it's not too far, and two, my mum won't care that we left the school. She'll just want to make sure you're alright." He grabbed my hand that wasn't full of rings and nose studs and pulled me right out the front doors of the school.
