the loud beeping jolted george and james awake.

it took george a couple minutes to realize who was causing such an obnoxious noise that late at night. just before both men stood, james' phone vibrated against his thigh.

will's name appeared on his screen. under it, a simple "here x".

"will's he-"

"yeah, i know." whispered george.

james bit his lip, hiding his phone back in his pocket. he watched as george looked around the dim house again. george moved slowly through the house, checking every inch of the home carefully.

he didn't want to come back for anything.

he didn't want to have to see alex again.

as the blonde man looked around, james waited at the door, gathering george's bags. a part of james wanted alex and george to talk things out, but he knew that alex had messed up one too many times. george couldn't take another heartache.

george deserved better.

james was better.

"george?" called james after a couple minutes.

george heard him but was unable to respond. standing in front of a photo, he released a pitiful sob. he hated himself for letting a framed photo control him like that. it wasn't until he saw them sitting together that he realized how much he loved, and hated, alex elmslie.

the picture must've been a couple years old, alex's hair was still red. they sat in the middle of a meadow, alex's head on george's lap. he could hear alex's laugh, his lisp causing his already slurred words to sound even funnier. one of george's favorite things about the other man.

and the truth was, george and alex hadn't been the same since. the laughs were rare and if they weren't fighting, they were pretending to be okay in front of their friends.

almost everyone fell for it.

"why am i not ever enough, james?"

"don't say that, george." james said softly.

george shook his head, wiping new tears off his lifeless face. he took the photo off the wall, admiring it a little longer. "move."

"huh?"
