Hydrogen leads the group down a hallway while explaining to them what they are up against. "Fluorine doesn't have the highest electron affinity. In fact, Chlorine, you do."
"Yes," Chlorine agrees. "I know the temptation of wanting to accept an electron."
"Fluorine does, however, have the highest electronegativity value," Hydrogen explains. "He now has an extra electron, giving him a negative ionic charge. I believe Fluorine is trying to become a compound so that he can gain more electrons to be even more powerful. Your job is to stop him before he accomplishes this."
Helium suddenly speaks up in his high pitched voice, "What is that written on the window?"
The elements all turn to the window Helium referred to and find words written on it, saying:
I am Electronegativity!
"Obviously, Fluorine wrote that," Neon comments. "He has the ability to etch glass."
"Let's continue," Hydrogen says, leading the group away from Fluorine's message. "Fluorine was last spotted heading towards the mountain. If he is at the top, I warn you it will be cold. The Metals will be able to conduct heat for the rest of you, who are Nonmetals. What you will have to do when you reach Fluorine is use ionization energy to remove an electron from him, giving him a neutral balance once again."
"How do we do that?" Magnesium asks.
"With an ionization ray," Hydrogen answers as he stops walking. "Here we are."
The elements stand before a sealed door labeled 'Weapons Room'.
"There is a secret code needed to get into the Weapons Room," Hydrogen explains.
"What is the code?" Sodium asks.
"The electron configurations of each Noble Gas."
"Well that's easy for Neon and me," Helium laughs. "We are Noble Gases. Our configurations are easy because our outer shells are completely filled."
"Then why don't you two put in the code?" Hydrogen suggests, moving out of the way.
Helium and Neon step forward and type in the Noble Gas electron configurations onto the screen on the wall. The door slides open and the elements step inside.
Hydrogen gets a large weapon from one of the shelves and hands it to Cesium. "You have the largest atomic radius, so it's up to you to get close enough to Fluorine to shoot this ionization ray at him. It runs on ionization energy, so it will be able to remove the extra electron. Then Fluorine should be back to normal, but you must hurry before it's too late."
Cesium holds the ionization ray and says, "I will do everything I can."
"Alright," Hydrogen says. "You are now ready for your mission. I believe in you."
The elements leave the Periodic Table to find Fluorine before time runs out.
