She didn't know him.
They never met directly, but they had some run-ins before. The first instance was on a bus.
Taking a tour around the city hadn't actually been something she enjoyed. She mainly joined so she could read while getting to her destination, and, while she wouldn't call herself cheap, it did save a lot more money than a normal bus.
She had been reading when an unfamiliar voice spoke out to her.
"Excuse me."
She hadn't known it was initially addressed to her, but the person said it again. Resisting an eye roll from irritation of being disturbed from her book, she glared up to the person who spoken to her.
"What?"
The moment she did, she regretted the glare.
It was a boy. He worn green and had his hands attached to the straps of his backpack, leading her to assume he was a foreigner. His hair was styled in a unique spike, and he had this curious innocence to his expression. His oblivious, childlike gaze made her feel bad for wanting to yell at him.
Once noting he had her attention, he spoke, remaining rooted in his standing spot. It was as if he was unaffected by her rude behavior from before.
"The lady said the bus is getting a bit crowded, so, do you mind if we sit next to you?"
The bus supported four sweats per booth. She had two open seats in front of her, and one open beside her. His words caused her to glance around the bus, noting that it was unusually full. The boy took her silence as hesitation so he spoke again, shyly rubbing at his head.
"We won't bother you, I promise. Me and my friends swear on it!"
He gestured to somewhere behind him, causing her to look. Surprisingly, she hadn't noticed the two much more taller figures standing behind him. They were nodding at his words, leading her to believe they had indeed been his friends. They looked like quite the odd bunch, honestly speaking.
"...."
He stared at her in a calm fashion, but there was something intense about his eyes. Feeling a warmth take over her face, she scooted over, gesturing to the empty seats ahead of her. The boy seemed relieved, already fumbling to take a seat when she eyed him.
"You promise not to bother me?"
"Double dog swear!"
He saluted at his words, and the girl stifled a laugh. It was double dog dare, but the notion still got across. Thumbing the edge of her page, she resumed her reading, drowning out the hushed talks between the trio.
She didn't know him, so that's why she didn't bother talking to him.
The next time they ran-in to one another was at a city.
She was pushing her way through a rowdy crowd. There was an appointment she had to tend to, but with the amount of shoving going on, she had her doubts she'd even make it.She released a growl when the books in her arms fell to the ground. Sometimes people just didn't care about anything but themselves. But though she had colorful words for the vast culprits, she bit her tongue, bending down to collect her books. If she wasted any energy on them, she could be late!
"A-ah!"
She gave a small squeak when seeing a particular person trample over her books. Those books she needed. Those books that were so dear to her.
With angry tears in her eyes, she dropped to her knees to examine the dirtied pages. Wet mud had ruined its previous pristine look, and she felt herself wanting to cry and yell at the same time. If she hurried up now, maybe the same fate won't become of her other books.
Her mind had been so caught up in getting her books as quickly as possible, that she hadn't noticed the approach of someone else.
"Excuse me."
The voice of another was so jarring she didn't have time to properly react. All she saw was the boots of the person who confronted her. Big, thick boots. Probably muddy boots. But instead of pointing fingers and picking fights, she continued on gathering her books. But the person repeated their words, obviously wanting her attention.
With the amount of stress her mind had from her appointment to the jarring crowd, to the heart-break of seeing a valuable item perish, she was seething at any who came to her side. So, she just about had it when he—whoever it was had a male voice for sure—repeated his words yet again.
"Can't you see that I'm BUSY?! What do you want?!"
She glared at the big boots standing in front of her, angry tears in her eyes. The person had crouched to an eye level she could see, and had a concentrated expression on his face. Something about him seemed familiar, but she was too emotional to care about that.
"You seem troubled, and I noticed you dropped your books. Do you need help?"
Wiping her eyes, she bitterly replied that she was 'okay'. He already saw her crying and at her worst, so she really didn't want to see his face for much longer. But he wasn't having that. This person, whoever he was, didn't seem to care about her cold attitude. He remained crouched in front of her, and she could feel him staring at her as her hands moved to pick up her items.
The intensity of the stare, from what she could feel of it at least, caused her to become nervous, hand shaking as she picked up another book, only for it to fall out her hands.
"I gotcha!"
The boy chirped as he picked up her book. She held out her hand, expecting him to return it to her, but he began picking up her other ones too. She gawked, sputtering at his actions and how he clearly disobeyed her wishes. So, of course, the first thing she did was try to gather her attention.
"Um. Hello?"
The boy hadn't looked towards her, too busy gathering her books. With a glare she sniffed, waving a hand in front of his face to get his attention.
"Does your spiky hair prohibit you from listening?"
"What?"
He seemed as confused as she was when she said that. Silly or not, she got his attention. Pointing at the books in his arms, she demanded to know what he was doing. The boy, however, looked clueless, as if he didn't think what he was doing was a bad thing.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Helping you with your books! You looked really sad and like you needed help, so, I wanted to help!"
Her face flushed at the amount of happiness to radiate off of him.
"I-i'm not some damsel that needs saving!"
He seemed confused at that. What did being a damsel have to do with anything?
"But you were crying."
"S-silence! I was not!! I just got...something in my eye, is all!"
The boy laughed at her words, passing it off as a joke. But while she was fumed, inwardly, she was embarrassed. This boy saw her crying! What if he thought she was weak or something?
She had been so lost in her thinking she hadn't noticed his actions until he plucked the other books from her arms. She stared at him as if he grown another head. What, was he planning on carrying her books for her, too? She swatted away his hand before he could grab the ruined book, sending him a pointed look.
"What do you think you're doing?"
He looked at her as if she asked something silly.
"I thought I already told you I was helping you."
"Since when did 'help' mean you get to steal my books?"
He shrugged at her words, but seemed a bit hurt of being accused of theft. She immediately felt a pang in her heart. He was only trying to help, and she was being so mean to him..
"The crowds are pretty rowdy, so you'll bump into someone again. Let me at least help you with where you need to go."
But the girl shook her head, gesturing to take the books. When he backed away, she rolled her eyes. He seemed really intent on helping her, didn't he?
"Please. I know Yorknew like the back of my hand. Besides," she narrowed her eyes at him, "I don't even know you."
The boy hummed to himself, muttering something along the lines of 'I guess you're right'. Meanwhile, she was wondering about him in general. He was able to hold that many books with such ease, while she struggled with every step. No, she couldn't think about his strength right now—he was a total stranger wanting to help her. She had every right to be cautious, but she couldn't leave without those books, and he seemed too stubborn to give them back.
"I'm Gon!"
Huh?
She stared at him as he attempted to release a hand for her to shake, but soon gave up when the cost meant her books. Instead, he bumped her shoulder with his, laughing at her stiff reaction.
"Gon Freecss to be exact. There! Not strangers anymore!"
That cheeky little-!
She was caught in a pause. On one hand, she instinctively wanted to return her name because of her manners. But on another hand, she—
"AH!!"
Her sudden scream caused Gon to raise a brow. He didn't see any danger around, so why was she screaming? Yet the girl's face turned pale, and she looked so scared. So Gon, like the curious person she assumed him to be, questioned her actions.
"My appointment! I'm totally late!!"
She tried to go for her books, yet Gon dodged her. She tried again, only to be dodged, again. A growl of frustration escaped her. Would he stop playing?! She really had to go!!
"Let me take them there."
"This isn't the time, for—"
"Which is exactly why you should start leading the way."
He had an amused, yet stern expression to his face. Though she groaned, he had a point. She couldn't afford anymore wasted time. Not to mention what she was going to do about her ruined book. So instead of arguing, she rushed forward through the crowds, impressed at how he was unable to drop any books.
She didn't know him, but she couldn't stop thinking about him.
After her appointment, while she was busy cleaning away her ruined book in hopes of it being salvageable, she thought about the peculiar boy in green.
Gon Freecss was definitely something.
He didn't worm his way into her head as often, but there was some days where she was reading when he did. She'd just wonder what he was doing, if he was as stubborn as he was then. Then there were times where she thought back to her meeting with him, still unable to shake off the sensation that she met him before.
She was in the midst of her studies when she decided on looking into her suspicions. There was something about the name Freecss that must've been the sensation she felt, she noted. Nothing else made sense either way. So when she looked up various books and media sources, she was shocked to find out why.
Gon's related to Ging Freecss. The Ging Freecss!
Ging Freecss was an infamous Hunter, sometimes dubbed 'Legendary'. From what she observed, his skills were impressive! Yet what people state about his attitude, well..
Regardless, at least it scratched the itch of familiarity she got from Gon. She seemed content enough, but she felt like there was something else she knew about him...
"Number 96."
Standing at attention, she made her way towards the announcer's area. It had taken some time, but she finally relented on becoming a Hunter. She definitely needed the tools she could have to her advantage for her studies, and with everything locked behind Hunters Only items, she had no choice. If she wanted to pursue her dream career, she needed it.
She couldn't say she enjoyed the Exam. Just earlier, a boy with silver hair appeared and completely destroyed all competition. As funny as it was, she was also caught in the crossfire, going down in seconds. Needless to say, he got his badge as easily as blinking. That had to have been the thing she disliked most about the exam. It didn't help how the boy stared at her funny.
Still, besides that, the host seemed kind enough of running more trials after the boy left. They at least wanted more than one person to past this year's exam. Honestly, she was thankful for that. Even if the boy had been stronger than all of them, she still felt bitter at him showing up and doing all that. If he ruined her exam, she would've hunt him down for sure.
Aside from that instance, it was a challenge from then on. But she felt like the host knew everyone was discouraged from the absolute speed-blitz that was the silver boy.
"Here's your test. Are you ready?"
The girl nodded, pulling out a utensil from her pocket. Her final test would be a written one. While others groaned and complained tests weren't fitting for a Hunter, she kept her mouth shut. She wasn't all too skilled at fighting, but anything to do with writing, she'd conquer.
And she did! She got her licence not long after finishing.
She was now a Hunter! Which meant more access to different things for her, and her studies for information wouldn't be halted much further! She could get a head-start on her studies right away!
...Yet that boy from before wormed into her head. She didn't know a lot about Gon, and the information on his relative was restricted in public databases. She wondered that, with her current ranking now, if she could figure out more about his dad. Ging was always a taboo to talk about, and she at least wanted some insight.
Or so she told herself.
When she punched in the information while using her Hunter rank, she was shocked to see a familiar name and profile pop up.
"Gon's a Hunter?!"
This was a shock. He wasn't even her age and he was already one? Granted, she had about a year on him, but.. Why did she get the feeling he's been a Hunter much longer than just this year? After all, he wasn't around this year around..
Just how crazy was this boy?
She didn't know him, but that didn't mean she didn't want to help.
The next time she ran into him had been a complete accident! ...Like always.
She was called forth to a specific part of the world to use her knowledge from the research she had done to help this Hunter extermination team.
They were apparently going into something top secret, and though she wasn't given the details of it, she still assumed it was something major. Otherwise they wouldn't go requesting for every Hunter that could help with their knowledge regarding the quest.
She wasn't told much, but they had her inspect on the reasons why things and people went missing. She was told not to leave without another, but the other Hunters stated they wouldn't let anything happen to her or the others. Normally, she wouldn't have been worried about that, but there was something else about it that worried her.
Chimera. She picked up tracks of it sometimes, but never bothered facing it. It wasn't hurting much, and was just really really weird. But the situation seemed tense about it all, and while she and the others forked over the information they gathered to help sway the fight, she was dismissed.
