It was a normal day. For now.
Tony was walking from the coffee shop down the street back to Stark Tower, because he had wanted to walk for once. It had been a while.
He was eating a blueberry scone, because why not, when this kid ran into him. The kid had messy black hair and was carrying a baseball bat.
Wait... no, it was a three foot sword made from no metal alloy Tony had ever seen before. Then it was a baseball bat again.
The kid apologized under his breath and ran off, the thing in his hand switching back and forth the whole time. A poodle ran after him. No, it was a giant black hairy thing the size of a tank. Tony noticed he wasn't the only one staring.
He decided the kid was more interesting than being back at Stark Tower, so he jogged after the kid and the dog.
He found them grappling in an alley. He just stood there, watching the dog and the bat go back and forth, back and forth. Neither of two noticed him, as they were busy fighting for their lives. Tony watched until the dog bit the kids arm. "Hey Fido!" He said loudly. "You lose your chew toy?"
The dog looked up at him, flickered into the hairy tank thing, and growled. The teenager with the sword took the opportunity to run it through the skull with said sword . The giant thing howled and exploded into yellow dust that completely ruined Tony's new shirt.
The teen got to his feet, panting. "I had that covered."
"Sure you did." Tony rolled his eyes. "Anyway, why'd it keep switching back and forth like that?"
"What are you talking about?"
"One second it was a poodle, the next second it was a giant furry tank."
The kid eyed him with new interest. The bat in his hand continued to flicker between a sword and a heavy wooden stick. "I'm-"
A sensation like going from a hot-tub to an icy pool, and then getting used to it and going back, over and over and over, slid down Tony's skin. It was accompanied by a slight humming sound, like the worlds biggest hummingbird was hovering on top of the Empire State Build. The air seemed to vibrate, and then there was a scream.
Multiple, actually.
The teen, whose bat had now firmly transformed into a sword, sprinted towards Tony and ran past him. He and Tony watched the city freeze, even the cars. Some people were screaming, and had their hands over their ears.
And then it stopped. The sensation, the sound, the vibrating, and the screaming. It seemed like the whole world was holding it's breath.
And then pretty much everyone started running, screaming, yelling, and taking out their phones to post the whole thing on social media.
The teen cursed in a language Tony didn't understand. "I had better get to camp," He muttered under his breath, "Annabeth is going to kill me, I wonder what crazy deity is trying to kill us this time-"
He ran off, still carrying the sword. Tony figured nobody would notice a teen in this chaos. He had to get back, Pepper was probably having a heart attack...
