TRASH CAN BLUES ON BLUE

better drum and rattle

this basket

& steel

alleyway: down a dark moon throwdown fat october sky

it’s round and cold and like a mother

holds all of our wrappers

like we were still small smoldering children

with candy, candy, candy

better drum and rattle

too many cans under the sea:

when the jack tug overturned

and Michael went lungs up in the deep

thrum on engine block

take on take

better drum and rattle

rakes, their tipped caps, loony pent up men

coming off the tankers and ships

that sailor deep his cups

walking a straight line

to love.

what does love even amount to near the dockyards?

gasoline? oil? nothing survives there but life with a rat heart

and enough courage to brave the light

it’s dark all the time inside

even the possum has to scream its way out
