It isn't until Thanksgiving arrives and I roll out of bed that I realize just what I've subjected myself to for the day. Wanting to see Mark again has once again clouded my judgment as now he's going to be meeting my parents and Lauren. More importantly, he's going to be meeting Lauren (who has not changed from being Satan in the last twenty-four hours). It isn't that I don't love my sister, but she has the tendency to try and embarrass the living shit out of me. I already know this will be no different.
I wander down the ladder and into the kitchen wearing nothing but a pair of boxers and a white tank top. I'm not sure what time it is and for some reason coming down here had seemed like a better idea then just checking my phone. I blame the fact that it's Thanksgiving and my mind is on nothing but family. That and I can already hear Mom rummaging around in the kitchen. Her Thanksgiving dinners have always been the highlight of my year.
"Mornin', Ma," I mumble out the words sleepily as I make a beeline for the coffee maker. She steps in front of it before I can completely get there.
"Nope. Shower and pants first. Then you can have a cup of coffee with some sort of breakfast." She crosses her arms over her chest in that Connie Hoying famous way of doing so. "You know how this family works by now, Scott. Shower and pants always come before caffeine. End of story."
I fake a groan. "But Mom-"
"Nope. Not today, Scott. Go shower and put some clothes on. You have to pick your... Mark up soon anyway."
Her minor slip up causes me to laugh. "Friend, Mom. We're just friends."
"Well, I would say after one date you're a little more than just friends." She smiles when I roll my eyes and turns around to step toward the fridge. There's a carton of eggs in her hands when she speaks again. "Then again, I'm old enough to have an eighteen-year-old, so what can I really know about teenage dating?"
"Just don't be weird. Please."
Dad decides to enter the room at that moment. He's already dressed in some nice fitting jeans and a sweater with a button up under it. It's a pretty typical outfit for my dad. "Your mother be weird? She would never do such a thing."
"Oh, Rick." She chuckles. "Stop it and help me get the turkey pan out of the high cabinet."
"That goes for you too, Dad." I shoot him a look. If anyone is going to say something wildly weird and inappropriate for how long I've known Mark it will be my father. "I really like him and I don't want Mark running away because you too scare him off."
"Scott, I promise that your mother and I will be perfectly well behaved."
"Okay, fine." I chuckle and exit the kitchen. My plan had been to get some caffeine in my system but it seems my mother isn't going to let that happen. Today I have to play by her games, so first on the agenda is a shower and some pants. It's in my best interest to stay on Lauren's good side today meaning I make sure to walk as slowly and softly as possible once I'm up in my room.
I send a few texts to people before grabbing an outfit and heading back down to the ground floor. Slipping into the bathroom without bothering my parents again, I'm able to actually start my day this time. The shower is quick and soon I'm wearing black skinny jeans with large rips in the knee and a navy blue jersey for some football team my dad really likes. I've never been hugely into sports, but I've always been hugely into my dad. For some reason, it makes him happy when I wear the jersey of his favorite team, who might be playing today but I'm not sure, but I'm willing to do a lot to see him smile.
Fixing my hair to make it look presentable takes a while, but I'm not in the mood to throw a beanie on when I know I'll be seeing Mark later. I really just want to look perfect today. "Can I have coffee now?"
