The next day, in between ballet practices, which her adoptive mother thought would be good for her, Estelle went to the wall in her room.
"Monsieur?" she said as she knocked on the wall. "Monsieur Erik?"
"Yes, child?" the voice answered.
"I have a few spare minutes, may I go explore with you?" she asked. The door in the wall opened in response.
"Come, my angel." Erik said as the girl entered his labyrinth. They once again went to the house across the lake and played music and other such things. Erik helped her make a punjab lasso and taught Estelle how to defend herself with it.
"Monsieur Erik?" Estelle said while they were sitting and drinking tea.
"Yes, Angel?" he replied.
"Why do you wear that mask?" she asked him."I was deformed from birth." Erik stated simply, not wanting to go into detail.
"Oh, okay." Estelle said. She was curious as to what was hidden underneath the porcelain mask, but decided against asking him to take it off.
Soon, Estelle had gone back to her room. She looked at the time and saw that it was long past time for her next ballet lesson. When she exited her room, her adoptive parents were there talking to Madame Giry, the elder, and Madame Giry, her ballet instructor. They turned around and saw her. Raoul pulled Estelle into her room, and Christine followed behind.
"Estelle." Raoul said sternly, "Where have you been? And this time, don't lie to me."
"I-I, um..." she stuttered.
"Estelle."
"I was...in the tunnels." she admitted shamefully.
"I told you not to go down there!" her adoptive father's voice rose. Christine placed her hand on his arm, calming him down.
"I know, and I'm sorry." Estelle said through teary eyes.
"Estelle." Raoul said once his voice was calm again, "There are dangerous things under the opera house. I just want you to be safe."
Estelle stood there in silence unsure of what to say.
"Goodnight." Raoul said, giving her a light kiss on her forehead. Christine did the same, and they left the room, leaving Estelle to think over things as she got ready for bed and went to sleep.
