Mom: “Sarah, we’re leaving in 20 minutes. Double check that you have everything you need!”

That’s my mother Libbie. She’s the organized one out of us. Meaning my family. My father’s name is Richard. He’s the emotional one. He’d be glad if I decided to drop out and live at home for the rest of my life. He still thinks I’m the baby. Lastly, there’s my brother Nathan, he’s 11. For the past few years he’s looked up to me. Believe me when I say I am nothing of a role model. I honestly don’t know why he believes in me so much. But he’s always there asking me for advice and telling me how amazing I am. Anyway, my name is Sara. I’m 17 years old and today will be my first day at Boston University. I’m finally spreading my wings and transforming into this college girl. Or some shit like that. I was supposed to be starting my senior year in a few weeks, but based on my test scores they decided to let me attend Uni early. So here I am stuffing my purple hippo into my overly full suitcase. Normally I wouldn’t of packed this much stuff, being only an hour from home and all, but my mother insisted that I pack EVERYTHING I own.

I shut my suitcase and pull it off of the bed. It makes a heavy thud as it impacts with my room floor. I glance around my room making sure I have everything I need. I drag my suitcase to the door and take one more glance at my room. This is where I spent the last 17 years of my life. I guess it’s finally time to move on. I spin on my heel, turning off the light and closing the door, and roll my suitcase into the living room. There isn’t anyone in sight so I grab the keys off the counter and make my way to the car. I throw my suitcase in the trunk and go back inside. My mother and father are sitting on the couch while my brother plays with our dog, Versace.

Libbie: “Honey, do you want to get something to eat now? Or do you want to wait until we get there?”

Sara: “It really doesn’t matter. Whatever you want to do is fine.”

Richard: “We’ll find something to eat once you get settled in. We’ll have brunch or something.”

Sara: “That sounds great daddy.”

Libbie: “So are we all set to go? Sara do you have all you need? Nathan put Versace in her cage.”

Sara & Nathan. “Yes mom.”

Richard: “Seems like were good to go.” My father ushered us all out the door as he locked up. We all clambered into the car as my father began the hour drive to BU. Throughout the whole ride my brother wouldn’t shut up. He kept asking me what would happen now. Who was going to read him stories, who was going to tuck him in, who was going to give him advice. The only thing I could do was assure him that everything was going to be fine. Eventually he just laid his head on my shoulder and began babbling on about his problems. I hopped out of the car when we pulled up to BU. I stared at the swarm of people rushing right and left.

Libbie: “Richard, dear, can you get Sara’s suitcase out of the car? Nathan, please don’t wander off to far. “

Nathan: “But mooooommmm. What if I see something that only occurs once in a life time?”

Libbie: “You know what. You better hold my hand throughout this whole trip. We wouldn’t want you getting lost.” My brother pouted as we all walked up to the registration booth.

Register Lady: “Name and grade?”

Sara: “Sara Mitchell. I’m a freshman.”

Register Lady: “You’re in room 213. Here are your keys and your schedule. Freshman orientation is at 8:00 o’clock. Good luck.” I grabbed my stuff and a map that was on the counter.

Sara: “So if I’m reading this map correctly, it says that the specific dorm I’m in is located in the West Lyden building. Which should be…..over there,” I pointed ahead of us. “Or…maybe it’s over there. I’m not sure exactly.”

Richard: “Let me see that hun.” My dad grabbed the map and turned it around. “The West Lyden building should be on our right. See,” My dad said pointing at the map. “We’re in front of the East Lyden building right now. So if we just go right we should run into it.” My father turned and led us the correct way to my dorm. I stood outside of room 213, key in hand, not knowing if I should go in or not. My mother noticed my hesitation and took the keys out of my hand, opening the door herself. I walked in and scanned the room. There were two, what looked to be twin size beds, placed on either side of the room; a small half bathroom in the corner; and a small flat screen TV in the center of the room. On the back wall was a massive window stretching from corner to corner.

Libbie: “I think it’s a good thing that we went shopping. This place definitely needs a pick me up. The shipment should be here by tonight. Do you need help with setting up your room when it does?”

Sara: “No mom, I’ll be fine. Dad you can put my suitcase over there. Uhm, don’t you all have something you should be doing right now?”

Richard: “Right, we’ll just leave you to it. In an hour or so we’ll text you where we’re having brunch. See you later sweetie.” I hugged my parents and then my brother as they made their way out.

Sara: “Finally.” I grunted plopping down on the bed. On cue, what I presume was my roommate, walked in.
