She remembers the first time she had to say goodbye.

"We're moving. Again."

She sounds tired to him.

"Where?" His voice is quiet. As usual, but he sounds sad.

"Hawkins, Indiana." A sigh follows her words. "I don't want to. But dad said we have to."

He lost her, when she moved to Maine. A whole country away, separating them. And now she's moving to Indiana.

"I'd rather go back to Russia, where you are."

A sad smile graces his lips. "I wish you could. I miss you."

"I love you, Alexei."

"I love you too, Avery."

"I have to go. Dad wants me to help pack."

"I know."

She has to wipe the tears roughly from her cheeks with the knuckles of the hand that isn't holding the phone attached to the wall.

"I'll talk to you later?"

"Count on it."

There's a small smile still on her lips as she hangs up the phone.
