Eighteen.
"The proof's in the kiss."
At around eleven am, between lessons, Marley was speed-walking through the halls, avoiding her friends and in search of the tall, dark-haired girl that had been on her mind incessantly. Her hands twitched at her sides; she couldn't deny the anxiousness in her bones. But what for? She couldn't pin it in her mind, but she felt she'd know soon.
Jen was waltzing about the school halls around the same time, contemplating on whether she should just skip lessons. She was slow walking, eating an apple, ignoring the endless stream of strange looks from her classmates that were passing. Her day already felt as if it were dragging and it had barely begun, she'd been debating on the idea of just going home ever since she stepped into the school building. She thought about texting Marley to see if she would skip with her, but she knew that idea was out of bounds for the golden girl.
A hand curled suddenly around Jen's wrist then and she jumped backwards, dropping her apple to the laminate floor.
"Hey, what the f—oh, Marley?" Jen smiled down at the honey blonde, who was looking even more bashful than usual. She was tugging gently on the older girl's wrist, guiding her towards an unoccupied science lab. "Where are we going?"
Marley muttered something under her breath that Jen didn't catch and then turned, closed the science lab door and looked back to her smiling friend. "Sorry, I didn't mean to, uh, drag you, yeah sorry."
"You're being weird," Jen laughed, leaning against the wall. "What's going on with you, Mars?"
"Jen?"
"Yes?" The older girl raised an eyebrow, a look of amusement obvious on her face. Nervousness was radiating off Marley, not even she knew why she was so anxious, and Jen could see it. She watched the younger girl fumble for words, rack her brains for the right phrase.
"Could you..." Marley began shyly, glancing away from Jen's bright blue eyes. "Could you kiss me, please?"
There was a pause, a stunned silence between the girls. Marley looked tentatively up at Jen and was relieved to see a pleased grin breaking through her brief look of shock. Inside Jen Archer was happy, it was a fast spreading happiness, and though she was confused, the question Marley asked had overjoyed her.
"Are you alright, Mars?" Jen asked, a half smile bright against her lips.
"Yes? I'm fine, I'm just asking, is that so weird..." Marley trailed off quietly, mentally noting all the emotions she was feeling and memorising them for later reference—when the second stage would come into play.
Jen stepped closer, and Marley felt her heart hiccup, breath jumping in her throat. "You having a bad day? Someone pissed you off?"
Weirdly, the blonde felt she'd temporarily lost the ability to speak. She didn't know whether it was influenced by the dream or whether these emotions had always been there. So, without speaking, she slowly shook her head, round, pleading green orbs gazing up at Jen.
Jen touched the back of Marley's arm. She was baffled at the sudden progression and was worried something was going on with the younger girl. But her worries were extinguished when she felt Marley's hand grab at her sweater, pulling faintly at the material. So, she really wants to kiss me, huh? Jen thought to herself as she bent her neck slightly down towards Marley.
She pressed their lips together without hesitation. The blonde's hand was still clutching Jen's sweater, feet shuffled forwards so their knees grazed. Jen fingers were brushing gently along the back of Marley's arm, every movement preventing the younger girl from floating off the ground. Every time Jen's lips met her again, her body felt lighter, fluffier.
