I took a sip of my caramel flavoured latte before setting it back down on the counter, picking at my chipped pale pink nail polish as I slowly glanced up at the clock that read 11:13pm. I sighed noisily, I really shouldn't be here, it was a bad idea to wander the streets of Mullingar this late at night by myself. But I couldn't help it, my boyfriend of eight months had just told me he didn't love me and ended it over the phone. The phone. My mascara was probably smudged and running down my face, I most likely looked like a terrible raccoon, but at this point I could honestly care less. I wasn't looking for anyones symphathy and I was not in the mood to socialise with anyone at this point.
The bell to indicate someone had walked it went off and the cool Autumn air swooped into the cafè, slightly blowing my hair around. I took in a deep breath as a bleach blonde haired guy took a seat two down from me and waved at the man behind the counter. He told him his order, his Irish accent rolling off his tongue as he spoke. His voice sent a chill up my spine and I shivered, taking another nervous sip before he looked over at me, grinning.
"Hey." he called as I quickly ran my index finger under my eye before looking over at him, giving the handsom boy a small smile.
"A-are you talking to me?" I stuttered, dumbfoundedly, my eyes scanning over his angelic face as he slightly chuckled, running his fingers through his bleached tips.
"Uh, yeah," he responded, smirking. I slightly nodded and opened my mouth to say something as he stood up to take the seat next to me. "I'm Niall." he said, leaning on the counter. I positioned myself to face him, giving him a sweet smile.
"It's nice to meet you, Niall. I'm Sam." I responded, my eyes locking on his beautiful blue ones. He held out his hand and I shook it, chuckling.
"You look like you've had a rough night." he said, furrowing his eyebrows as he reached his hand up to wipe away the mascara from under my eyes.
"Oh," I exhaled, quickly running my fingers under my eyes again before smiling at him. "My boyfriend and I just broke up." I replied, frowing at the ground. I bit the inside of my cheek to hold in the tears and quickly took a sip of my latte. Niall gave me an apologetic look, the one thing I wasn't looking for from anyone, even if it was Niall Horan. I was surprised I'd been so calm the whole time he'd been sitting in front of me.
"I'm sorry, love." he murmured, placing his hand on my thigh. I looked down at his hand and quickly shook my head, trying to give him a reasuring smile.
"Don't be, I guess it just wasn't meant to be," I sighed, fiddling with my fingers. "But enough about me, why are you here?" I enquired, raising my eyebrows at him. He gave me a shrug and looked around the room, clearing his throat.
"I normally come here if I just need some time by myself or—"
"You're in the mood for coffee." I assumed, cocking an eyebrow at him. Niall laughed and nodded, smiling at him. He quickly pulled out his phone as he looked at the time.
"So, you come here often?" he asked, stopping what he was doing to smack his palm against his forehead, looking up at me. "That was cheesy." He added, chuckling at himself. I gave him and shrug and placed my elbow on my knee, resting my chin on my fists. I smiled at him and nervously bit my lip as I realized how close our faces were.
"That's okay," I said, smiling. "I like cheesy." I quickly added, looking up at him for a reaction. He gave me a surprised but pleased look and handed me his phone.
"Well in that case," he said, smiling at me. "Add your number and maybe we can meet up again." He added, giving me a wink. I felt my cheeks burn as I took his phone in my hands before handing him mine. I quickly put my number in and handed it back to him as I took the last few sips of my latte.
"Perfect, I'll text you sometime." He said, standing up with me. I gave him an enthusiastic nod as he handed me back my phone.
"Sounds good, I'll see you later." I said, picking up my things to head out. He cleared his throat, making me stop and look over at him.
"I don't get a hug?" he asked, giving me a mock-frown. I giggled and wrapped my arms around his neck, the butterflies rising in my stomach as his arms tightly draped around my waist, pulling me closer to him. I grinned into his shoulder, who knew a total stranger could make you feel so happy even when you didn't want to smile.
