Chapter Twelve
Alexis waited at the manor while Jacque had was creating the whirl pools on the far side of Jothlin. She was still shaken from the battle, even though she really didn't do much, she had ordered the golem that Jacque had given her to attack the soldiers who surrounded her. The golem clearly wasn't aware of the difference of harming a human and harming a creature of its own kind as many fell by its massive rocky arms. After the battle, Jacque had commanded the creatures to return to the earth and the holes from where they emerged were re-sealed by his magic.
All of the elements, Alexis had thought earlier, He really can control every element.
Her thoughts, now, were turned elsewhere. The soldiers who did survive were compelled to aid their fallen comrades, though many thought it better to let them die, apparently dying was better than being a prisoner according to Veshua's orders to his soldiers.
I can't believe a man like Veshua would rather have dead men... although he did say that if any betrayed him then they were as good as dead... or so one of the soldiers told us, Alexis thought. She knew something like this was bound to happen and that death was indeed necessary for the survival of her people. But she couldn't bear the guilt of having to kill. Despite its necessity in this war that was inevitable, she still didn't want it. Jacque didn't want it either but he kills anyway, kill or be killed was what he had been taught as his father trained him to use a sword at a young age. John apparently had the same mind set but that still doesn't make it right... does it?
Jacque had walked in as she finished her thoughts, he couldn't help but discern what thoughts troubled her and decided to answer her question, "Unfortunately it is necessary, Alexis," she jumped at hearing him speak and answering her question, "Whether or not it is right is entirely on how you view the scenario. Killing just to kill is wrong, killing to survive is right. I know it's seems redundant but that's how life works in the world of war. Either you kill or be killed. I don't take joy in what I do, but I have to do it. To survive, protect, and save."
Alexis nodded, knowing what he said was true and that was enough. Shortly after his response to her question, the Governor walked into the foyer where they had been told to wait.
"We are indebted to you both," the Governor said, "What can we do to help you in your endeavor in freeing the rest of the kingdom."
"You can help by creating a blockade using the enemy's ships," Jacque said, "and if at all possible, see if you can persuade some those who had taken control of this island and are in good health to aid you in disguising the ships as still theirs so any of the supplies sent to aid them will still be able to come until we're ready. Though, most likely, none of them will come. And I'll have a message sent out to inform every one of the attack to retake Main Island. Using both their own ships against them, and our own."
"Very clever, mage, I do hope this plan of yours truly works," said the Governor.
Jacque smiled and downed a silver potion from his satchel. Alexis wasn't sure why he did this and would have to wait until a better time to ask him about it. The Governor asked them to join him for dinner, and they made their way to the dining hall. As they walked, Jacque seemed a little tense as Alexis had stood close to him. Surprisingly, he offered his arm for her to take as they walked to the dining hall. Once there, Jacque pulled a chair out for her then took his own place next to her. The Governor smiled as he saw the polite gestures that Jacque had made for her.
"You're quite the gentleman, mage, I didn't think you'd be that polite to the princess."
"Yes, well, I haven't really been on my best behavior since she has been with me, so I thought I'd start acting the way I should. If my father were still here he'd be angry at me for not being polite to her sooner."
