Chapter Nineteen
"The Governor told me he governs the other Unnamed Island as well as the one we were just on. So it was somewhat easier to lay a hold of than any other since there was no government to really over throw," Alexis explained as they had sailed closer the second Unnamed Island.
"Yes, I thought as much. But the same goes for the Isles of the Four Sisters," Jacque added, "they too only have one Governor. And those islands are almost small enough that they together could make one of the lager islands."
"I've always wondered why none of the islands seem to have volcanoes," Alexis thought aloud, "I mean, don't most islands form from volcanic activity?"
"I've heard that too, but ours are a little special. From what I understand, it used to be a continent that sunk beneath the waves and the tall mountains are all that are left," Jacque replied. Though the conversation was suddenly changed, he still appreciated her talking. He wanted to remember her voice for as long as he could until... but he continued speaking with Alexis. They both noted the weather and how the rains seemed to have stopped, but the clouds remained.
Jacque soon began to feel nervous. The fear of finally confessing his love, and getting hit by arrows began to gnaw at him. The moment was nearing as they neared the island. Every second seemed to sicken him even more but he had to shake it off, he couldn't let her know what he was feeling. But she had a feeling something was wrong already the night before. But she said nothing of it. As she looked over the waves and watched the fish and dolphins jump, Jacque quickly downed a sliver potion to help calm his nerves and keep him from stressing too much. He also knew if he was too nervous when he was to... die, it wouldn't do well for his body either. He took a deep breath afterward and pocketed the bottle.
"Jacque, did you hear me?" Alexis asked as she looked at him after he put the bottle away.
"Huh, what?" Jacque had completely tuned her out without realizing it.
"I said, what do you think about the dolphins? They are beautiful creatures, are they not?"
"Oh, yes. I occasionally stopped my mediations on Lo Bon to watch them at a distance. Though I wasn't this close, I could still see them with a spy glass that... John left me."
"Your spy glass? The one you have with you?"
"Yes, it was once his. At least I think so, it could have been my father's. I don't remember but I do know it helps remind me of both of them."
They smiled, Jacque was somewhat forgetful about many things he had. However, he still knew a lot more than Alexis thought he could possibly know. Then she realized, there was only the one time he used 'magic words' for a spell that he used in the forest on Lo Bon that he used to protect them from the hurricane. But she figured it was for show but just to be sure: "Jacque, your spell, the day the hurricane came to Lo Bon..."
"Spell? What spell? I may be a mage but we just manipulate and control the elements to our will. There was no spell that day."
"But, you were chanting," Alexis protested.
"No, I was praying to the Deity, or Father if you will, of this world."
"You were praying? To whom?"
"I know not His name, as it is lost to us. All I know is my father and his forefathers were worshipers of this Deity. Though I think he told me of a religion from the continents, though I don't know for sure."
"I thought you were a descendent of one of the sages?" Alexis asked, remembering what he had told her in the past.
"I am. Most mages are descended of sages of knowledge. Though I don't know which one. Possibly the one who passed down swordsmanship to those who wished to defend their homes and the islands. I only know that my father knew swordsmanship, and no magic was in his bloodline."
