Chapter Fifteen

The night was pitch black. The annual rains were starting to come over the islands. It would be tough to sail from island to island after this battle. But the pirates pressed on, rowing as silently as they could to the shores of Hagrath. Jacque sat with Alexis, he had done what he could to clear her mind of the probable dangers of Lo Bon and that she shouldn't worry about forgetting sword moves, they would come back when she needed them. It worked for him and the pirates at the dinner with the captain assured her the same. Still she was nervous. Though he regretted it, Jacque held her while they neared the shore to help calm her nerves.

There was something about the embrace that calmed her. Alexis didn't think it would help since she had feelings for Jacque and he hid his for her. But just being there, close, was enough for her to think that he loved her. She knew he cared, care was all he wanted to show, but time would tell when he'd tell her the three words she wanted most from him. Despite their differences of social standing, she couldn't care for any other man than him. Admittedly, she didn't think this at first, but her love for him grew during the time they had together.

The boat reached the shore in less time than Alexis thought had passed. Jacque immediately stood and half lifted her to her feet to be ready for the fight. The plan was set to action, they all quietly rushed to the walls of the city. First, the smaller pirates scaled the walls and took out soldiers and guards until the others arrived at the portcullis. The gates were then opened allowing the other pirates, Jacque and Alexis too, to sneak in quietly. Though pirates normally didn't attack so quiet, stealth was of the essence for this battle to take place so late at night. As the pirates flooded into the city, Jacque stopped abruptly next to several lit torches. Alexis could see he had an idea as he smiled and took two of them from off the wall.

The sound of battle rang through the night, Jacque and Alexis joined the pirates as the soldiers of Veshua realized they were caught off guard, and then quickly were ready for the fight though it was unexpected. As the battle ensued, Alexis was able to fight with five men at a time and handled herself better than she had before, she was surprised and fought as if she had been a professional fighter her whole life, but she still narrowly dodge several attacks. Despite nearly losing her head several times, Jacque merely stood holding the two torches, watching her fight. The pirates had no problem fighting at night and Alexis only assumed Jacque was holding the torches to give her light to see who she was fighting, it helped very much. After more men fell by her hand, she soon remembered that Jacque controlled all elements. The flames would be used to incinerate the enemy.

Gold Tooth showed his former self that Jacque knew from the fight he first had. Anger was more of a playful roar, and laughter because he had so much fun tearing through his enemy to victory. Though his laughter was much less in the fight that Gold Tooth had with him, Jacque still knew Gold Tooth's mannerisms from their brief encounter and from what he had heard from others who formerly tried to overthrow him as Governor, though he only heard most of those stories from Gold Tooth himself in letters written to him. The pirates each had their own way of fighting, many used the skills taught by Jules but the rest threw in a mix of what they felt was the best way to fight. Many learned fast that it was better to do as taught rather than get slaughtered from something they chose to use for themselves.

The fight continued for a few more hours before the enemy realized that Jacque just stood and watched everything. Though corpses were at his feet, they were not killed by his hand, the torches he held were providing light for Alexis. They figured he wasn't a warrior or pirate of any kind and several ran to kill him. Alexis, tired, stumbled to Jacque's side. She was a little worried about the advance of the enemy but she knew Jacque would use the flames from the torches eventually. Veshua's soldiers surrounded them to prevent any from assisting them and to cut off their escape. Little did they know, that's exactly what Jacque was waiting for.
