"You did a wonderful job Alec... then again I expected nothing less of you. You're one of our best soldiers after all. Nevertheless, congratulations. We've been trying to get rid of Santiago for months".

"It was my pleasure sir. Killing downworlders brightens my day, you know that", I reply with a cruel smile, satisfaction and pride running through me like a tonic. I know all of those things of course, but hearing them out loud always does wonders to my confidence. Then again, I've never doubted myself. Not after... that night. Never again.

"I know my boy. That's one of the many things you and I have in common. Anyways, the need to congratulate you isn't the only reason I called you in my office. I have another mission for you".

His face hardened and his empty gaze froze upon me. His lifeless hands folded on top of his desk as his shoulders went back and made every muscle in his body tense. Most people are afraid of him, especially when he stands like that in front of them, showing that he's capable of anything, that he can end them with a simple look.

But not me. I was never afraid of him. I'm not afraid of anything anymore. Nothing can scare me. Nothing can stop me or even excite me. I no longer feel those feelings. I no longer feel anything, and it's for the best. My heart has turned into stone and that's how I prefer it. Stones don't feel pain, don't understand loss, don't get hurt. They are strong and unbreakable. And that's how I like it. Emotions are nothing but a distraction. I learned that the hard way.

"What do you want me to do?", I ask with a tone of interest. Which one of these scums will stop burdening the world with their existence?

"Straight to the point I see. Good. So here's the thing Alec. You've proven your loyalty and your dedication to our purpose countless times. I hope this case isn't any different. As you know, we've been trying to get rid of the representatives of each kind of these filths for a while now. Luke Garroway, the leader of the strongest werewolf pack in New York died three months ago--".

"You killed him you mean", I add and a creepy smile forms in his lips, but he doesn't comment on it.

"-And you killed Raphael Santiago, leader of the strongest vampire clan last night", he continues like I never interrupted him.

"Knowing that the Seelie Queen's loyalty lays with the highest bidder, there's only one left".

I let his words sink in, and then my brain starts to process them. With seelies, vampires and werewolves out of our way, there's only one kind left. The worst one of them all. The warlocks. Realization slowly hits me.

"Magnus Bane", is the only thing I can manage to say. He nods his head.

"Bane has always been an important obstacle in our plans but he's also very powerful. And that's the reason that we haven't done anything concerning him. But now, now we're so close to achieving what we've been fighting for all this time, he's an obstacle that needs to go away. He can no longer interfere and mess with our plans. He needs to go. As soon as possible.".

Silence. I slowly raise my gaze from the floor, where it's been since his name left my lips, for the first time after years, and it meets his. With what I hope to be is a blank, unreadable expression, I spell out the words he doesn't dare to say.

"You want me to kill Bane". Again, silence. But this time, I'm not going to be the one who'll break it.

"I want you to choose. You've been avoiding your past for so long, but you can't escape it anymore. If you do this, if you succeed, you'll have everything you want and more. I'll make you my first in command, I'll give you power, authority, control... you'll be the luckiest bastard in here. But if you don't..", he doesn't finish his sentence, but he doesn't have to.

I know what'll happen if I deny the mission I've been assigned. I'll be considered a traitor and be immediately executed. That's how work things around here.

If I was facing this dilemma a few years back, I would gladly die, without a second thought, if it meant that I could protect him. How romantic, how silly and naïve.

Things are different now. I'm no longer that cute, innocent and sweet victim everyone took advantage of. I don't care about him anymore. I don't care about anyone anymore. In a selfish world, only the selfish survive. And I'm a survivor.

"When do you want it done?", I ask in a cold tone, betraying no emotion. Perhaps because there is no emotion.

"As soon as possible. Wise choice Alec", his grin widens and slowly becomes one with the shadows that surround him until he's no longer present.

I get up from the chair I've been sitting during our meeting and open the door of his office, stepping into the corridor that was fiiled with the last rays of sun for that day. It's already dawn.

'No going back now. There's nothing to stop me. It needs to be done quickly. There's no time to waste'.
