Her Song

Give me one year to try again. Please.

Jieun knew it wasn't fair for her family. Yes, they were doing way better now, but money was still tight. With her younger brother going to university in a few years, her salary from a job would help a lot.

However, music was her life - the reason she managed to make it this far. So when she hesitantly asked her family to give her a chance, they were more than happy to let her go. They knew that she would never be happy without music, and deep down, they truly believed she could make it.

That's how Jieun ended up on the streets of the big city, holding her guitar and fixing her microphone as she prepares for her first ever busking session.

Jieun knew that at her age of twenty three, no company would accept her as a trainee and debut her as an idol. But that didn't bother her. It's not like she was that confident in dancing, anyways.

Her best shot at stardom was her voice and her songs. She believed in her capabilites as a singer, and she hoped that the songs she wrote could touch others. That's why she decided to busk. Who knew if a company scout would find her and sign her, right? Besides, she enjoyed seeing people enjoy her music.

With the strum of her guitar, Jieun finally takes her first step towards her dreams.

It was well into the night when Jieun finally decided to finish her busking session and head home.

With her limited budget, the girl was lucky enough to rent a cheap room in a nearby apartment. It was perfect for her year with music - she had enough space for her instruments, and the beautiful city view beyond her windows was a dreamlike source of inspiration.

Tomorrow she would start going to companies to hand over her CD, a collection of songs she wrote and recorded throughout the years. And if all goes well, she hoped that someone will contact her soon and sign her. Then she would be able to meet him at the top, like she promised him years ago.

She smiled at the thought. Yes, it was still a long way to go, but at least she finally started walking the path she believed she was destined to be on.

"So tell me which way to go..."

A clear voice pierced her daydreams.

There it is, she thought, his beautiful, crystal-like voice.

Jieun looked towards the direction of the shop that had been playing the song. An elderly looking woman stood behind the counter, albums surrounding her from every corner. Among them, a certain black and white album, titled Verse #2, stood out to her.

Maybe it's a sign I should buy it. I have enough money on me, and I have been wanting to buy his work to support him.

And so she bought it. Her very first album with his voice. She was aware that this was such a small sign of her support for him, and he wouldn't even know that she bought it. But it still meant a lot to her, to have the work of him she cared for dearly; the him who made it to the top.

"Excuse me, young lady. I forgot to give you the fansign ticket to fill," the woman's voice called out to her.

Jieun's eyebrows wrinkled in confusion.

Fansign ticket? I bought an album, not a fansign ticket. Don't you have to pay a lot of money to get into a fansign? As much as I'd like to meet him, I don't have money to spend.

"Sorry, ahjumma, what fansign ticket? I only bought an album," she said.

"You get a ticket to fill when you buy an album, dear. They'll draw a lucky fan to go to the fansign from these tickets. Here, I'll show you how to fill it up."

"Ahh, I see. I'll fill it up then. Thank you, ahjumma."

The woman smiled at Jieun as she finished filling up her ticket. "I'll be rooting for you to go to the fansign, Jieun-shi."

Jieun returned the woman's smile. "I think I'll have to be really lucky to win that. I guess I'll get going now. Thank you, ahjumma."

That night, Jieun played the album she bought.

His voice was still as clear as ever, but now more mature than it was years ago.

What if I end up going to the fansign? That means I'll have to meet him. I wonder if he'll still recognize me, though. I'm a very different person compared to eight years ago.

Her worries were justifiable. Jieun was very different from eight years ago. Her then long, straight hair was now in cut in a bob. The dots that used to fill her face was gone, along with the braces she used to wear. She now wore contacts instead of her thick framed glasses, mostly because she hated having her glasses keep falling off her face.

So yes, she was sure he would not be able to recognize her.

But her physical appearance wasn't the only thing that has changed. Her current level of confidence was way lower than eight years ago. She didn't have as much fun as she used to, her face more gloomy than before. The happy teenager was now replaced by a struggling adult.

This isn't the Jieun he last saw.

And deep down, she was scared he'd be disappointed.
