Y/N = Your Name
The Doctor was not a deep sleeper. He didn't need much sleep, and there was always danger, always something to be awake for, so he was more than used to short naps. Sometimes he wouldn't go to bed for weeks. A power nap standing at the console, and off to another adventure, he was a Time Lord, he didn't need it.
But after the five week adventure in the Mountains of Infinite Mazes, his companion had insisted that he needed a recharge. He tried to stall you. He tried to catch you up in stories, which usually worked, and when that failed he tried to pry a story out of you, something about why you made up that name for the mountains ("Because there were mazes and they never ended." "But they did, eventually!" "When we blew a hole in them, now get to sleep!"). Honestly. That was supposed to work. You were stubborn today. But fine, fine, he'd sleep.
For now.
As usual, you were right, because when he woke up again he did feel better. Though... What was that?
Crash!
"Bloody-!"
The shout, that's what got both hearts beating double time. He sprang out of bed. Hindered, admittedly, by the blankets tangled in his legs, which nearly sent him crashing to the floor. He knew that shout. He knew it all too well, hear it once and it stays forever, infecting his nightmares. You were supposed to be safe on the TARDIS. He'd promised.
"Y/n!"
He ran.
He thought his hearts were going to explode out of his chest. The Doctor was never ready to lose his companions, but Y/n, the thought of you getting hurt, even a small wound, anything, a paper cut, sent pain and panic through every cell in his body. It was quiet now, and that only made him run faster towards the general direction of the shout.
What he saw when he reached the kitchen did nothing to calm him down.
He looked for blood first, eyes flicking wildly around the room, but there was no blood, only a white dust. Strange. The kitchen was a disaster, white powder and kitchen appliances scattered everywhere, but that all fell into the background when he saw you.
Both his hearts stopped, froze, shattered. You were curled up in a ball, sitting on the floor with your knees to your chest and your face buried in them and you were crying. He could hear it. It was another sound from his nightmares, another sound he'd so desperately hoped he could protect the both of you from.
"Y/n?" It took everything in him to speak softly, to step slowly and kneel down in the dust - flour, it was flour - with you. He wanted to run and grab you and search you for injuries, but you were hurting emotionally if not physically and you needed him to be calm. At the sound of his voice, you stopped sniffling, tensed, but didn't look up.
He needed to know that you were okay. He needed it more than he needed to breathe.
"Y/n, love, can you look at me?"
You shook your head.
"Please? You seem very interested in your knees, but I'd like to make sure you're alright."
For a second, he thought you weren't going to move, and the panic thrumming through his veins was making it harder and harder to keep from taking action. But then you lifted your head. Your eyes were red and your face was puffy and his chest hurt again.
"Oh, Y/n," he breathed. His hand came up, gently and slowly, giving you time to see it and tell him not to touch you, but you didn't. He brushed the tears off your cheeks and your hair out of your face. "Oh, Y/n, my Y/n. What brought on the tears, hm?"
"I..." You blinked hard, fighting the lump in your throat. "I was trying to... The flour just... Everything went wrong."
"Shh, shh, it's alright." The Doctor did the only thing he could think to do, and pressed his lips to your forehead in a gentle kiss. The familiar gesture eased some of the tension out of you. Taking this as a good sign, he pulled you into his arms, and he was so warm and so kind that you started crying again. Even just this one thing, you couldn't get right.
"I've got you." He murmured other reassurances into your hair, once or twice slipping into a language you couldn't understand.
You knelt with the Doctor in your kitchen disaster until you stopped crying. And a little bit longer. When you were ready, you pulled back, and let him help you to your feet.
He did that same gesture again, the one where he brushed your hair out of the way and held your face and met your eyes and unlocked all of your doors. "Now," he smiled, "what happened?"
"I..." A deep breath steadied your nerves. You weren't upset anymore, just embarrassed. "I wanted to surprise you. I was making custard doughnuts because you love custard, and then things kept going wrong and... How sad am I, crying over doughnuts?" You tried to laugh, but it was more of a scoff.
His smile nearly split his face in two.
"Oh, my Y/n, my wonderful, fantastic, brilliant Y/n."
"I know, it's stupid-"
"No. It's not stupid. You are not stupid." The Doctor released your face, only to grab your hands. "You are kind, and brave, and thoughtful."
Another familiar gesture. He moved one hand off of yours to boop your nose.
"Tell you what, let's take a break, then we can clean up this mess and try again together, hm? How does that sound?"
You couldn't help but smile. Sure, you were still embarrassed, but now it felt silly to be embarrassed, so you smiled and nodded. Whatever fear was left in the Doctor from worrying about you, it vanished when he saw your smile. "That sounds fantastic."
And it's exactly what you did. You made another mess, sure, but mostly on each other, thanks to a food war. And the doughnuts tasted better than ever.
Wow I actually got so into writing this, I thought it was gonna be a short one but no it's over 1000 words wow
Two updates in one day!!!! But considering how long it took me to start publishing I mean that's the least I can do. I hope y'all liked this!!!! Especially Ayanna_Wild pls don't have a heart attack that's my job.
I only have one more request so I'd take more but I suggest maaaaybe waiting until that one is published? IDK you don't have to wait if you don't want to but if you do then the finished product will appear closer to when you requested it. As opposed to the current requests who have waited months I'm still so sorry ahajjsjsksmsks I hope it was worth the wait.
