Chapter 2

I was eye to eye with my pursuer.

I blinked a few times, unable to see clearly without my glasses, the image in front of my face a vague blur. A small round face draped with large blond locks came into focus... And there were those wild grey eyes searching deeply into mine.

With all my might, I pushed her off my body roughly, freeing myself from her grip. I let out a strangled noise as I looked back at her, my anger ready to erupt like a volcano and it was about to burst of any minute. "You...Ashley...You" I croaked frantically, my voice showing a plethora of emotions, the previous fear replaced by my escalating rage."You scared me to death! What the hell?"

Her icy grey eyes grew remarkably wider, and she just stared back a me, as a lone tear escaped her eyes. Ashley was quiet, as a deadly looked passed thorough her eyes...she looked terrified. Another rolled down her face as she whispered. "Mom" , her voice breaking under the raw emotion.

"What's wrong?" I whispered

"She's gone mad Allie. She'll crying and yelling....Something's  wrong Allie."

" That doesn't sound like the Aunt Lauren I know. She's strong and brave."

"I know" she said fervently. "But she keeps on saying someone is after us...some guy named Evans. I cant even sleep, I can hear her cries through the wall into my bed room."

Someone's after us. I stood deadly still, sinking in her words.  So, someone is lurking around in the woods--I wasn't just being paranoid.

A small bead of sweat tricked down my cheek. It was suddenly hot...why was I sweating in this frigid cold?

The window...I turned back fervently, scrambling toward the window, only to see that it was tightly closed, just like I had left it. Then those fingers...that hand... I looked out the window, catching faint glimpses of the surroundings, the frosted glass door obscuring my line of sight; no one was outside except the wind and the leaves.

" Ashley, didn't you see some one out here? At the window? There was someone out here" I said turning back to Ashley, who looked utterly confused. She just shook her head, her eyes boring deeply into mine.

My body was fully facing her now, I started walking toward her, exasperated, unable to shake off the fright she infringed upon me.

" And you silly girl, you scared me to death! Is that the way to come say hi to me, at this ungodly hour! What were you thinking?"

"It's 12:00, Rebi.'' she said.

I raised my eyebrows at her, "Yess...." I dragged out slowly, waiting for her to continue.

"October 25, Rebi, my birthday, and it's 12, so, happy birthday to me." Her face looked impossibly more hurt, and my ire dissipated at an astonishing speed. I just stared back at her, feeling my eyes softening considerable, unable to believe that I had forgotten Ashley's birthday.

"Oh sweetheart, Happy Birthday! I didn't really forget your birthday...I was just...caught up in something." I looked over covertly to the window.

"And guess what, Ash?" I whispered as I bent down to her. " I even bought you a cake this evening. Its your favorite, double chocolate."

She looked up at me,  her eyes full of excitement, before her face fell again. "Whats wrong?"

"You know, Rebi, Dad died on my birthday. I just didn't know if I like it anymore...my birthday. It caused  Mom and me to be so sad because he died that day."
