A pair of forest green eyes scanned the beach in search of entertainment. Humans. Midoriya had always enjoyed watching humans play and relax on the warm sandy beaches, especially on days like this. The yellow sun warmed his body and reflected light off of his scales the same way it did the shells on the beach. That's right- scales. Midoriya was a mermaid.
Midoriya had become obsessed with humans ever since he heard a couple speaking about them. He had been sunning himself on a large boulder that jutted out of the sea. He chose this boulder because it was almost directly under a dock, but far enough away from it so that the afternoon sun would radiate its heat directly on it.
The chatter of seagulls had lulled him to sleep as he sunned his sea foam green scales on the boulder. He remembered laying with his head in his arms so that one ear was open to the air, listening for anyone that could get close enough to see him. That's when the chattering couple neared the dock.
Midoriya had flexed his long muscular tail, stifling a yawn as he awoke from his midday nap. That's when a word one of the humans squealed in excitement caught his attention. "I know, I know. I just really wish I could see a mermaid one day!" the higher pitched voice exclaimed with glee.
It never fails. Humans just don't seem to realize just how dangerous his kind really are. He didn't understand where humans got the notion that mermaids were magical and friendly. At least they got one thing right, mermaids did have a form of magic. Well, quirks is a better way to explain it.
Most humans didn't realize it but quirks were actually derived from mermaids. The many humans that had acquired quirks nowadays had their abilities passed down from mermaids hundreds and hundreds of years ago. There are stories his people told of a mermaid mating with a human and lent some of their power to their mate. The human betrayed the mermaid and the mermaid died, but the human kept a small amount of the power.
Perhaps this is where the mermaid mythology came from. The human betrays the mermaid, the mermaid dies, the human keeps a portion of the power and lives on to pass the power to different generations. Now nearly every human has a quirk thanks to mermaid kind. He could see why mermaids hated humans.
More often than not, his kind used humans for one thing and one thing only. The only use mermaids had for humans was food and sometimes entertainment. He grimaced at the thought. The mermaid form of entertainment was often to torture or force the human to mate against its will. Either way, all of it ended the same. The human would ultimately die a horrible death.
Midoriya sighed and pushed himself off the rock and into the chilly ocean below. He didn't like eating humans and he never could bring himself to partake in human entertainment. Most of his kind found it odd that he had a soft spot for humankind after what they had done to mermaids. He didn't care. They didn't see what he saw.
Ever since he had been told the story about quirks coming from mermaids and the tragic death of his ancestor, he couldn't help but feel angry and honestly quite sad. He figured that if all humans were the same, why not observe them for himself and see if the stories were true.
So he did just that. He swam with all his might to the surface and scanned the area for something he could perch himself on. It had to be something inconspicuous but close enough to observe the humans whenever he wanted. This is how he ended up finding the perfect sunning rock.
Day after day, he would observe the humans on the beach. They would often busy themselves making structures out of the sand, slapping a ball back and forth to each other, or simply lay on cloth out on the beach. Humans seemed to enjoy sunning themselves just as much as he did and that made him smile softly to himself.
Seeing the humans having fun and spending time with each other seemed so peaceful and Midoriya had a hard time believing all humans were violent mindless beasts that were only out for blood. He had been lost in thought when he had heard a human scream. His eyes snapped to the location to see one of the humans swimming frantically from a large dorsal fin behind it.
He lowered his torso to peek under the water and confirm what he thought it was. Dual eyelids flicked across his emerald eyes, protecting them from the saltiness of the water. Unlike human eyelids, he had two sets. One similar to humans and the other clear that could still be seen through even if they closed. This allowed him to see under the water.
Midoriya scanned just below the surface of the water and spotted the splashing of the frantic human being trailed by a rather large shark. It nearly had the human and was within several feet of it, it's mouth agape with rows of jagged gnarly teeth. This human would be lunch if he didn't do anything.
It was forbidden for mermaids to be seen but as long as they stayed hidden and had no witnesses to their activities, they were allowed to do whatever they wanted. He figured if he stayed below the surface that he would be following the rules. He shoved himself off the rock and stretched momentarily in the water.
He tensed his body, sparks of green shot around his muscles, leaving track marks across his large muscular tail and well defined back. The mermaid shot like a rocket towards the shark, connecting with it in an instant. He grasped it by it's tail and swam back into deeper water with it, distancing it from the human.
The shark felt virtually weightless when Midoriya used his powers like this. He released the shark once he was nearly a mile away from the beach. It turned to face him and stared for a moment. Midoriya cocked his head, wondering if it would try and attack him for freeing it's meal. If it did, he would eat it. Mermaids were not afraid of anything in the water. This was their domain.
The shark seemed to understand this because it swiftly turned tail and fled. The young mermaid shrugged and casually swam back to his sunning rock. He enjoyed how effortless it was, raising his tail slowly up and down like whales did to propel himself through the water. He was faster than most of the other sea creatures in the ocean but then again, most mermaids were.
Once he barely broke the surface of the water next to his rock, he peeked around it. The mermaid raised his head until his ears were above the surface of the water. He needed to hear if anyone was nearby. Once the coast was clear, he surfaced fully and spread out on the warm rock again, shivering at it's warmth.
"I saw what you did, monster." A gruff voice called out from several feet above him. He tensed, raising his upper half and spinning around to see who spotted him. Before him was a creature so beautiful, his radiance blinded him like the sun. "Tch. As if that makes you any less of a monster. Mermaids are killers." He huffed.
First chapter done. By the way I don't own any of these pictures. They belong to their respective owners.
