“I can’t believe that my invitation is late!”Emma complained.

Emma by the way is my bestest friend in the world. When I became part of Natasha’s family I went to the same school with Hayley and Mackenzie and that’s where I met Emma when I was six. Emma has flaming red hair and dark eyes and she has an eye for fashion. I’m no fashionista but Emma would always try to make me wear heels and body con skirts but she hasn’t succeeded yet. Well, today Emma’s wearing a white tank top with an unbuttoned denim blouse over it and a floral bandage skirt and a pair of floral pumps. While me, I’m wearing a white tank top with a pink hoodie, skinny jeans and a pair of white canvas sneakers. Some people don’t how we became best friends. Sometimes, even I don’t.

“What invitation?” I asked.

“Well, duh!” she said as she closed her locker. “The invitation to the Halloween Masquerade party!”

“Oh, that invitation,” I said. “And can I ask why you want to go to that party?”

“Because,” she began. “That would be the biggest party of the year!”

“The school year just began, Emma”

“That’s not what I meant. I meant that being invited to this party is like being Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus! Anybody who’s anybody is going to that party!” she explained as we made our way to the cafeteria. “And didn’t you know that Jeremy McKing is hosting the party?”

“He is?” I said dumbstruck. Jeremy McKing is the hottest, nicest, most popular guy here at Seattle High. He is also the love of my life. I’ve been in love with him since middle school when he accidentally hit me with a volleyball and tried to make up for it but I didn’t let him because my stepsisters would kill me if they saw me talking to him much less have him begging for forgiveness at my feet. He has an average height, he’s a bit pale (at least he doesn’t try to tan his skin and destroy skin cells), he’s not skinny yet he’s also not rock-hard muscular, he has this super hot messy-yet-fixed pale blonde hair with a few streaks of brown here and there and hypnotizing blue eyes with a few specks of yellow near the iris. I love him with all my heart but he’s probably oblivious to my existence and has probably forgotten that he accidentally hit me with a volleyball.

“He is. I bet you wished you got your invitation, too, huh?”

“Absolutely!” I exclaimed. “But even if I did have an invitation, which chances are that I won’t, Hayley and Mackenzie are going to that party and they’ll do everything for me not to go to that party.” I looked at Emma sadly. I have never been to a party ever because of my stepfamily, even if it’s Emma’s birthday party. They won’t allow me to have a social life. The only socializing that I do is when I’m at school or when I’m at home.

“Hmm,” she said as she pursed her lips. We were in the cafeteria now and were about to take a seat when Michael Philips, a.k.a Jeremy McKing’s bestfriend came toward us.

“Hey, Emma,” he said as he smiled his charming smile at us. “Jeremy couldn’t hand your invitation personally ‘cause he’s also giving away invitations. So, here’s your invitation and another one for your little sidekick there.”

“Hey, I am so not Emma’s sidekick!” I protested. “In fact some people actually think that Emma is my sidekick.” They both just stared at me like I’m crazy. Oh, how I wish that I didn’t say that. I bet Michael’s going to tell this to Jeremy. Oh, I’m so embarrassed!

“Anyways,” he continued awkwardly, “the party’s going to be on the 31st and it’s going to be a masquerade costume party.  And the party’s going to be at the McKing’s. Why am I even telling you this? It’s in the invitation.” As he began to walk away he turned and said, “Will I be seeing you there, Prince?”

“You bet I will!” Emma replied back with a flirty grin. Michael winked at her and walked away to his table with all the other jocks.

“Oh my God!” we both squealed when Michael was out of earshot.

“I can’t believe that I’m invited!” I told her when we were already seated. I held the invitation which said:

You are invited to a night of fright and terror!

Where: Jeremy McKing’s house

When: October 31, 8 pm to 2 am

What: wear costumes and masks.

No mask and costume, no party

So be there or be dead!

I held the card like it was the most precious thing in the world. I still can’t believe that I’m invited to a party that will be hosted by Jeremy McKing! Although Michael did call me Emma’s sidekick but no matter, I’m still invited! I wanna jump on the table and do a happy dance but that would so weird so I’d rather not but my euphoria was immediately ruined by something I realized.

“Emma, I can’t go,” I told Emma sadly.

“Why not?” Emma asked. “All you need is to buy a costume or we can do a make shift one-“

“No, Emma, that’s not what I meant,” I said. “My stepsisters will be there and I can’t be there if they are there. They’ll bury me alive if I do!”

Emma was silent for a moment and the she said, “Fear not, my dear friend. I have a devious plan.” Emma said with a grin on her lips.
