The young black wolf stood firm, her ears perked forward. She waited expectantly for her mother’s orders. Her bright green eyes narrowed as she tensed, ready for action. She slowly crouched.
The wolf’s mother watched nearby. Her grey eyes flashed as she slowly lifted her golden colored tail. The black pup sprang into action and snarled as she jumped. She crash-landed in a bush, her paws breaking branches as she fell to the ground.
“Bedelia!” Grey eyes flashed angrily. The black wolf’s head poked out from the bushes, a frown on her face. “Do it again, that was a wretched attempt. You couldn’t kill a rabbit with that, much less snap a wolf’s spine.”
“But, Mother, I’ve been doing this move for more than an hour. Can I learn something different?” Bedelia shook the leaves off her fur as she got out of the bush. She turned to look at her mother pleadingly.
“No.” the golden wolf growled. Her grey eyes narrowed. “If you want to become Beta than you need to perfect this!” Bedelia growled lightly.
“Mother, I will be the youngest wolf there. Why would Shomari pick me?” Bedelia protested. Her ears pinned back.
“You will respect your mother’s decision.” The golden wolf turned away, but Bedelia still flinched. “Now do as a tell you. I’ll come back in an hour and see how you’re doing.” Bedelia’s fur bristled in objection but she didn’t speak up.
Bedelia growled lightly to herself before turning around and crouching. She sprang onto the bush half-heartedly as her mother slowly disappeared into the bushes.

“I promise you, she will be the best wolf there.” The golden wolf pleaded up to her Alpha. His pitch-black fur bristled slightly.
“If you truly wish for me to choose your daughter as my next Beta, Ramla, then you must give something to me in return.” The black wolf jumped down from his throne and slowly stepped toward the golden wolf.
“Of course, Shomari.” Ramla crouched down in a feeble bow. Shomari’s blood red eyes narrowed and his ear flicked.
“What of your son, why is he not training?” Ramla looked up in surprise and cleared her throat. “Isn’t he older?”
“Yes, Alpha, he is. But Bedelia is much more suited for you. She is strong willed.” Shomari’s eyes narrowed and his tail swished. He slowly stalked around Ramla, his red eyes staring at her.
“I see,” He stopped walking and stepped right in front of her. His nose was almost touching hers. The golden wolf’s heart fluttered anxiously. “So, my dear Ramla, what are you going to give to me in return?”
“I can catch you a fine buck.” Shomari snorted in amusement.
“I have plenty of prey, Ramla, you’ll have to choose something different.” Ramla’s ears flattened and she stared at Shomari in desperation.
“I can catch you a lamb.” Her voice flooded with despair. Shomari’s eyes narrowed suspiciously and he smiled slyly.
“You would risk your life for such a simple meal?” Ramla raised her head high and her eyes flashed.
“I’m doing it for my daughter.” Shomari’s black tail flickered under her chin and he smiled lightly.
“Are you sure that’s all the reason?” Ramla stiffened as she heard Shomari’s silky voice in her ear. Shomari smiled in satisfaction at her uncomfortable state.
