"The tragedy of life is not death...but what we let die inside of us while we live." ~ Norman Cousin

Caleb's POV

Pacing the walkway outside of my mate's room, I can't help but feel distressed. To know that I only just found her and she could be taken away from me at any given moment.

She was only unconscious when I found her 3 days ago, but Dr Isa said she is giving up. About 2 hours ago, she slipped into a coma. Apparently the only way to see if she will make it is to watch, wait and pray to the moon goddess.

If I was in her position, I would give up as well, as it looks like she has been abused for a fair few years by all the scars on her body. I know if she wakes up, she will probably never be normal, but I hope with me helping her, that she will feel safe.

Oh boy! I quickly race into the room, my wolf starting to pace around in my head, saying that he can feel the slightest hint of her wolf starting to come back. I sit on the small chair next to the bed and reach out to hold her hand. Gently I caress her cheek and smell her delicious scent, its stronger slightly, which means she is improving...hopefully she will make it through this.

I gently lower my head to the bed beside her and drift into a light sleep.

Hearing monitors going off, I raise my head off the bed, instantly alert. I realise that its my mates monitors that are going crazy and mind link the nurses instantly.
"Quick my mates monitors are speeding up and going crazy in here!"

They all race in with worried looks on their faces and read the charts and look at one another. I think I see a hint of a smile on one of their faces but before I can question it, they are instructing me.

"Alpha, we will need you to stand back, give us some room, you can sit on the other lounge just over there."

Hurriedly,  I gave them some room and listened closely to see if I could pick anything up. I heard murmurs of increased heart rate, brain activity and soon. Soon, what does that mean?

I watched as a nurse grabbed a glass of water and places it on the desk and then switched the main light off and had on only a small bedside table lamp.

I tried to peer around them, but I couldn't see  anything. Then my mates delicious scent filled my nose, strong and powerful and ...definitely alive!

My wolf howls with excitement inside my head and tells me that our mate is awake. A nurse mind links me telling  that everything went well and to just stay in the darkness for now.

I huff in annoyance and settle into the couch further. Then I hear the most melodic voice.

"Who are you! Your not my normal nurses."
My hear sinks, she is in hospital that much that she has 'normal' nurses specially for her.

"No dear, we are from the Bravenight Pack. We went to war with your previous pack 3 days ago and found you."

"I've been in hospital for 3 days already?" She asks timidly.

I sigh with relief that she is okay and her head whips in my direction.

"Wh-who is tha-at?" She asks getting extremely nervous.

"That's Alpha Caleb, your ma..." I cut off the nurse from finishing her sentence with a hard glare. She's already nervous enough without knowing about me being her mate.

"I'm the alpha of this pack. I hope you will enjoy it here."

I see her shudder and look at the floor... "Thank you master."  Tears drip down her face and run down to the bed, I stare at her, confused by her reaction. Are they great full or sad tears?

Wait what? Did she say master? My wold stirs angrily. The fact that she would put herself down in front of everyone when she is my equal, the rightful Luna to this pack infuriates me.

A growl shoots out, and she shoots back against the wall, eyes wide in fear. Her back is rigid and she starts to hyperventilate.

I move forward to calm her down, knowing that a mates touch can do wonders but she moves quick as light away from me flinching.

My shoulders sag in disappointment, even though I have found my mate, she is not really mine.

I will have to just keep trying until she trusts me enough. "Shhh, shhhh its OK, I'm not here to hurt you, you are safe here. My pack all want you safe, happy and healthy."

"Bu-but I'm no-t wor-rth it."

"Hey now, you listen to me, you are a strong lady and a very important person so I need you to try to eat some food and get some rest for me OK?"

"O-ok."

I mindlink the nurses telling them to bring in some healthy soup. They walk in the door a minute later with a bowel of warm sweetpotato and bacon soup.

They place it on a tray in front of my mate and I sit back down on a chair. "What is your name beautiful?"

"Le-a, sir."

Again with the names, why is she calling me that?

"That's a really pretty name, but Lea, you don't have to call me master or sir, just Caleb. OK?"

"OK mas- Alpha Caleb."

I inwardly huff. She still calls me alpha, but at least she isn't stuttering as much when she is talking to me! Baby steps will go the fastest and have the strongest connection in the end.

I see her eat five spoons of soup and push the bowel away. "I'm not hungry anymore Alpha..."

She must be so starved at her last pack of that small of an amount made her full. Sadness consumes me from the way my little mate was treated before she got here.

"OK, that's alright, we will eat some more when you wake up. Sweet dreams Lea."

As soon as I say that her body begins shaking but she is so exhausted that sleep overtakes it quickly.

I whisper "You will get better Lea, I promise."

I give her a brief kiss on the forehead before going back to the lounge to give her the space she needs.

Hope you enjoyed this hopefully sweeter chapter. How long do you think it will take for them to start being more like mates or for her to figure it out? Shoutout to @poetry81 for being a huge support so thank you :)
