"c'mon dad! Can you tell me a fairy tale?" a golden-haired girl asked her dad. Her bright blue eyes shining with expectation and joy.
"aren't you too old for bedtime stories, darling? her now old father replied as he tucked the child in bed "Besides, you should already be asleep, otherwise your mother's gonna kill us both".
"Please?!" the girl begged, "tell me about the dragons" she insisted.
"Dragons?" her father questioned as he scratched his gray beard "but they have been extinct since long before you were born, young one".
"Yes, Dragons! and fairies too!" she replied. Her smile widening.
"Alright, alright, just one story, then off to sleep" he then proceeded to sit beside the kid on the bed.
"Long, long ago, before this very kingdom was founded, this land was roamed by all kinds of magical creatures. The playful Fairies always celebrating, the beautiful unicorns speeding through the lands, the wise elves, smartest of the land, the Strong orcs, just to name a few. They all lived in harmony under the rule of the most powerful and fairest of them all, The Dragons." the kid gasped.
"yes!" her father exclaimed "Beautiful creatures indeed, huge dragons with scales as strong as steel, and claws sharper than any sword ever created, humongous wings to help them soar the skies, incredible fangs capable of pulverizing the strongest of boulders, but most amazing was their heart. They loved stronger than any living creature ever could, always passionate about everything, their heart was the key to their most incredible ability. Always burning with fire, it would let them manipulate the eather that emanates of every living thing on the planet, they created runes which they would use to manipulate their surroundings, they created amazing cities and monuments and wonders which no man could ever imagine. They helped keep the peace throughout this continent. And for many years the centuries living here knew nothing but peace and clear skies" her dad said
"And then what happened?" -the kid asked- "they shared their knowledge with all the other creatures, even men" -he smirked- "their king, Alistar, he was compassionate and caring, he decided that it was for the best that everyone learned of this new ability, he wanted all creatures to live as good as the dragons"- his gaze then became sadder.
"Not everyone was happy about this decision" he said "Abbadon the dark, believed that only dragons were worthy of this power, he opposed King Alistar, he rose an army of like-minded dragons and they fought against the king's rule, the war raged on for 100 years, many lives were lost, not only of dragons but every creature in the land was affected by this war. The king knew he couldn't win the war, so he did something no one ever expected. He allied himself with the Humans, the elves, the fairies, the giants, the dwarves, and the orcs, they all banded together and formed an alliance to defeat this darkness that would see them extinct. Abbadon realized he was outnumbered, but he was as smart as he was evil, he experimented with runs, instead of drawing its power from passion and love, he harnessed hate, despair, pain. Such emotions gave birth to the dark runs" The little girl was at the edge of her bed now, her father smiled and then proceeded to continue.
"Abbadon used this newfound power to turn the tide of the war. Hellfire rained from the skies as the battles raged on. The fields burnt to a crisp, suddenly what seemed a guaranteed victory from the alliance was now a rapidly losing war. Hope was scarce among the troops, but word came to the king. Abbadon was building a bomb, one with enough power to destroy all the living creatures, he had designed a mark, one that would protect all of his troops." the little girl looked at her father "and then what happened?!" he made a dramatic pause, enjoying the moment.
"King Alistar mounted a surprise attack. The allied forces hit them with everything they had, Abbadon found himself surrounded, his troops reduced to merely ten percent, in his despair, he activated the bomb. King Alistar knew what had to be done, he rallied all of the dragons and together, they gathered all of their eather, all of their power and created a barrier, protecting everyone, but at a great cost. All dragons died that day, protecting the realms, their bodies petrified by the explosion, the land of the battle now lost in time, the only body never found was Abbadon's. Rumor has it, he still roams these lands, looking for vengeance!" he finished. "Well, now its time to sleep little one," he said.
He stood up from the bed and walked to the door. He took one last look to her daughter. She looked at him and said "d-dad... is Abbadon ever gonna come back?" her father smirked. He had the same reaction when he heard that story oh so many years ago. "Don't you worry kiddo, I'll never let anything happen to you," he said with a comforting smile. He then turned off the lights and left the room as the kid fell asleep.
