"seriously, how rich are your parents, moony?" maura asked, turning away from the window of the plane. they had been in the air for hours, most of the teens sleeping or on their phones the whole trip. maura seemed to be one of the exceptions, staring out at the clouds for the entirety of the flight.munniya peeled the silky pink sleep mask off of her eyes and blinked wearily at her friend. they were situated across from each other, in plush seats with cup holders and a table in between them. "what did you say?" she asked. she had been napping most of the flight, waking up once or twice to check how far they still had to go.
"i said, how rich are your parents?" maura leaned forward on the table, her ginger curls sweeping into her eyes. munniya yawned and pushed herself upright. "my parents aren't rich," she said stoutly. "this is my uncle's private jet. he let us borrow it for the trip."
"parents, family — same thing," maura exclaimed, falling back into her seat. "also, why aren't you looking out the window? it's beautiful. the ocean is so clear."
"we'll see the ocean soon enough, when we get there," munniya said. she checked the time on her phone — 4:38. they were due to land on st. delphine's at five. she stood up, her legs becoming staticy , and stretched.
"hey, moony, come look at this freaking cloud!" grayson hollered from across the plane. "it looks like a dick!"
"you're so mature," maura sighed, scratching the side of her head.
grayson turned back to the window, snapping a photo of the cloud to show them later. he nudged adonis's foot with his, jolting the other boy awake. grayson had been on his phone til the whole trip, airdropping maura memes so he could see her laugh silently from across the cabin.
adonis groaned as he sat up, fumbling to close the shade on the window. "are we landing?" He mumbled.
"not yet," munniya replied. she walked over to victoria, who was passed out in her own seat. shaking the other girl's shoulder, she woke up. scrunching up her face.
as victoria sat up, the pilot came over the intercom. "we'll be landing at st. delphine's in about twenty minutes," he reported. "hang tight and we'll be there in no time."
adonis swept the hair out of his face and opened the window shade slightly. he saw the island in the distance, full of white sand and palm trees. he honestly couldn't wait — he was so eager to spend the summer with his best friends on an island, alone, with zero supervision. he anticipated a few of them getting wasted practically every night, so he brought a ton of board games to entertain himself in case he got left out of those festivities.
maura spent the last twenty minutes watching the ocean get closer and closer. she could see the reefs and trenches from up here. in some places she could see pods of dolphins swimming. but strangely she didn't see a single boat. she knew st. delphine's was a small and mostly uninhabited island, but she had anticipated much more tourists. maybe the boats were on the other side of the island.
finally the jet came to a smooth landing on a small runway near the sea. while grayson rebelliously left his seatbelt unlocked, munniya and victoria gripped theirs nervously. but as soon as the jet stopped completely, munniya was up and bustling about, dragging carryon items from under seats and telling everyone to get off the plane. adonis hurried down the stairs of the jet first, sighing as his feet met solid pavement.
"aloha, bitches!" grayson yelled as he jumped down the last three steps. victoria rolled her eyes. "we're not in hawaii, idiot," she said, a smile playing on her lips.
maura breathed in the cool, salty sea air and let the wind ruffle her hair.
this summer would be the best summer ever.
