Dealing With Writer's Block

Alright, I really believe that all serious writers deal with this at some point while writing stories. I also know that it can be extremely frustrating when you know that you seriously have to get a chapter out because it's been about a week (or even longer in some cases) since the last one.

Let me tell you something about writer's block: IT SUCKS MAN!

Seriously, I hate it with a true passion. The worst part about it is that you can't do anything to prevent it unless you practically have written down the entire storyline and you know exactly how the story is going to go down. It's impossible for me to do that.

Let me give you the actual definition from Google. I believe that it'll give you a better insight into what it actually is:

"Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work, or experiences a creative slowdown. The condition ranges from difficulty in coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce work for years."

Reading that last sentence made me realize something. When I was busy with the DDLC series, I only got writer's block maybe once or twice, and at most, only lasting for a couple of days up to a week. Now that I've completed the first books of Stolen Powers and Whatever It Takes (my ORIGINAL works), writer's block has lasted for a lot longer, a week or longer. What I'm saying is that writing original works probably has a higher chance of writer's block than writing Fanfictions. It makes sense, once you think about it. Fanfics may already have characters and their personalities set out for you (except characters you add in, ie Noah from DDLC), and they also have plot ideas and stuff like that. Original stories, on the other hand, you pretty much have to start from scratch and let your creativeness take control.

So, now getting to the point of this whole discussion, here's how I try to get through it, along with a few other suggestions. Of course, you're more than welcome to try some of them out for yourself if you'd like.

-> Sometimes, I just make myself to get something down no matter how bad it could be. Take a little break and come back later to tidy it up. That way, I'd already had something to work with instead of nothing at all.

-> When I'm stuck on a chapter, there are a few times where I'll stop and jot some ideas and plot elements on paper. I'm not exactly sure why, but it makes it easier to think and when I'm ready to come here, it's quicker to type it out.

-> Other times, it's just good to simply take a break for a while to recollect your thoughts. Some causes of writer's block are thinking too much into it, and that's the last thing you should do. Just let the imagination and creativity in your mind take over, and before you know it, you have a fully written chapter ahead of you!

Well, I hope these help a little for those struggling with writer's block, and trust me, it sucks. Let me know of any other topics you want me to talk about, and I'll be sure to put my thoughts on it. That's all I have for now! Later!
