Nine Lives

"A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for three he stays."

First, I was a tiger, freely roaming the prairie.

And then I was a leopard, living high on the Alps.

During my third life, however, I was a lion, performing for circus crowds. Always subject to my master's whip.

A picture shows a bag of newly born kittens being tossed into a river. My fourth life ended before it even began. Our cries drowned along with our bodies.

Another picture reveals a kitten running into traffic. My fifth also ended prematurely. Underneath a truck during a brutal winter.

My sixth life was spent in an alley.

And then suddenly (during his seventh life), I was a creature of pure reality. A possession to be groomed, a prize on display.

I was not so lucky during my eighth life, however. I found myself in a dark room, amongst others deemed unwanted. "Oh! You sure are cute, aren't you?"

...

"Welcome to your new home!"

I was hostile, at first, since I couldn't know your intentions. But gradually, I came to tolerate you. I began to understand.

Thank you.

You, who taught me the true meaning of "home." You, who never asked for anything in return. I can only thank you. In my final moments, as the last of my strength left my body, and I closed my eyes in your arms...

I made a wish.

That I could be by your side once again...

That is, if you would allow it, I will give my final life to you as well.

...

The panel shows a little girl approaching a colorful kitten.

"Oh! Look, mommy!"

The mother turns to the girl.

"A kitten!"
