Amanda walked right into Prince' one room and parlour self-contain apartment and sat on the sofa and looked straight ahead at the 32 inches plasma television but not really seeing it. Prince came and knelt down in front of her, enclosing her face with his palms and gently bringing her face to face his. His dark-brown eyes held so much fear in it. She was scared too.
"Babe, talk to me. Is everything okay? Did you go through with it?" He asked and she shook her head. He was taken aback. His face registered anger briefly, so brieftly she thought she had imagined it. Then she convinced herself she had only imagined it when he asked in such a calm voice, "Why? Was the money not enough?"
She shook her head swiftly, "It was but, the doctor, he said... he said, " Was all she could get out of her mouth before breaking into sobs. It was so painful.
Prince was confused. What could the doctor have said?
"Tell me what he said. Are you alright?" She nodded, wiped away her tears and mustered up courage.
"He said it would be a bad idea if I abort the baby. That if I do I might.. I might never give birth again. That... that it would take a mira..." She sniffed. "miracle to give birth again." Now, the tears were uncontrollable. She even began thinking about all the other babies she had lost. At this point, wondering if it would not have been better if she had stayed a virgin or even at least, used a protection. Prince had always hated using protections so he had her on contraceptives but she didn't always take them. And she didn't always take them at the very wrong time.
Her parents were going to kill her. They always took her as their golden child. Her father would just remain silent and looked at her with so much disgust that she would wish he would even insult her. But her mother would beat the living hell out of her. Her mother was always an action woman and this was going to draw her wrath. How was she going to face them? She kept looking into Prince' eyes as if she would find answers to questions she hadn't even asked. But all he was doing was clenching his teeth, his jawline was set strong and for a moment, she was scared that he would get up and break something. But in an ever gently manner, he picked up her hand and enclosed it in his.
"Baby, is that why you're crying?" Her head shot up, stunned.
"Isn't it enough reason for me to cry? Isn't it?" She was almost shouting and was positive she looked like a witch that moment with the eyeliner and mascara she had gone overboard with that morning. "God, I feel so stupid. So... Argh!" She buried her face in her palms. The pain felt like it was tearing up her insides. She felt his hand around her, and she wanted to shrug it off but also, wanted to bask in the warmth of his comfort. She had never felt more confused.
"Baby, everything would be alright. We'd get through this," He said softly and she looked at his face.
"We'd keep the baby?" His eyes widened, they registered fear. It looked like he was searching for the right words to say.
"Baby," He started, enclosing her hands in his. "Remember the life we dreamt of? A beautiful house, cars for each day of the week. Trips every summer to different parts of the world."
Amanda nodded, already being soothed. "And children." He seemed to be forgetting that part.
"Yes, honey, lots of children. One for every room of in big mansion, going to the best schools. And we would have them, lots of them. But a child now would really complicate things and take us a step back away from out goals." Amanda frowned.
"What are you saying? You still want me to go ahead with the abortion?"
"Baby, yes, but-" She didn't even wait for him to complete his statement, she jerked her hands away, horrified.
"How could you say something like that? After all I just told you?" The anger was bubbling inside of her at that point and it felt like she was going to explode.
"Relax, babe," He said as she looked at him as if he was stupid. How could he tell her to relax in this kind of situation? "You didn't wait for me to finish. You know Doctor Richard isn't a professional doctor. I'll take you to the best one in town, so he won't do a quack job. You said the doctor said might right?" Her head was spinning. She had a part of her brain tell her not to believe him, but the part the part that loved him, that wanted to be with him desperately, the part that still believed in their wonderful life together, grasped onto his words and she nodded. He'd never lie to her. "Good, which means it may or may not happen. We'd pray about it." It was the first time she was hearing him talk about prayers. He must really love her to be willing to go to that length. "Everything will be okay. We'll still have everything we've dreamed about. The beach house, maids for every house chores. You'd be known all over the world. The wife of Prince Okoye, the richest man in the world." She smiled at the though and he smiled back. "Now, give daddy a hug."
