Geoffry Rupert stared at the brochure in his hands as he adjusted himself in his seat. 'Welcome to Norrisville!' was printed in big red letters on the cover page. Raising an eyebrow, he flipped over to the next page and began to read.
'Norrisville, a town of rich Japanese culture, has been standing since 800 years ago and is still going strong. With the world's first man-made volcano and a huge amusement park, hundreds of tourists visit Norrisville every year for the latter two, but thousands come for more than just an attraction...'
Geoffry continued reading. "McFist Industries, the largest and most richest industry relied on by Norrisville is run by Hannibal McFist - wow, it says here almost everything in Norrisville is manufactured by Mr McFist, he must be that rich," he spoke softly to himself in the airplane, careful not to wake the man sitting next to him. Geoffry read about Silt, Mexican Death Bears and education in Norrisville and did not stop until the last section. Now that was something that made him frown.
'For 800 years, thanks to a beloved hero, Norrisville has been well protected from robots and monsters that have become a part of everyday life. Ever since the town was founded in the 12th century by Japanese merchants, The Ninja has fought bravely against the many dangers that threaten lives. Other than Hannibal McFist, The Ninja of Norrisville has been an extremely important public figure who is kind, wise and courageous, traits that are found in a true hero. He is still protecting Norrisville up to this day, although none knows his true identity, as he never takes off his mask in public.'
Geoffy's eyes widened as he looked at the photograph of The Ninja. The 'hero' was slim and looked quite young, judging by the posture and the eyes. He didn't dress up like a ninja that Geoffry normally saw; his black suit had red markings on his face, hands, body and legs, and he had a red scarf around his neck and waist.
From Canada, Geoffry grew up with the knowledge that there was no such thing as superheroes, monsters and deadly robots. 'People turning into monsters?!' he thought, scanning the page. 'That doesn't even make any sense!' He assumed this was just a tourist trap, or maybe there was a Ninja, but 800 years ago and now people still remembered him...Geoffry tried to forget all this 'nonsense' and leaned back in his seat to rest. This school trip transfer to Norrisville better be worth it...
At the airport, Geoffry carried his luggage to the bus stand, where a Norrisville High school bus was ready to pick him up and drop him at the campus, where he would be staying during his two weeks transfer.
There was no one inside the bus except for the driver, who had red hair and was wearing a fedora which hid his eyes. He nodded at Geoffry and waited patiently until the boy sat down. The ride was silent as nobody said anything.
Geoffry looked out of the window. They passed an amusement park, Whoopee World, where Geoffry saw that the main character for the park was a kind of huge red squirrel...He found that a little creepy.
When they finally reached the school, Geoffry exited the bus with his luggage and his jaw dropped. " For an 800 year old town, they sure have some very stylish schools-" "That's right!"
A somewhat high male voice sounded behind him. Geoffry turned and saw a man dressed smartly who wore glasses.
"Hello, I'm Principal Slimovitz of Norrisville High School, and you must be Geoffry Rupert, out transfer student from Canada." The principal shook Geoffry's hand.
"Nice to meet you sir," replied Geoffry nervously as they entered the school building and into the Principals' Office. Slimovitz motioned for Geoffry to sit down at his desk.
The principal took out a couple of files from the drawers next to him. "Welcome to Norrisville, Geoffry. I guess I wouldn't have to say much about this town seeing as you've already read the brochure," Slimovitz nodded towards the papers that Geoffry held. Geoffry blushed and stuffed them into his pockets.
And so the principal rattled on and on about the rules, the events, the people, the slang and everything else while Geoffry pretended to be listening. He was actually staring at all the posters of the principal and his car. They'd been at the beach, Whoopee World, McCineplex and practically every place in Norrisville. 'Slimovitz must really like his car.' Geoffry stopped daydreaming the moment the principal began to talk about monster attacks.
"Wait, what? Sir, surely you're aware that this is probably just a tourist trap - there's no such thing as monsters and deadly robots..." Slimovitz stroked his chin. "Well, maybe the monsters are a tourist trap, but the Ninja is real, you can't say no to that." Geoffry's jaw dropped as he stared at Slimovitz incredulously. "But...-" The principal cut him off. "Maybe you just haven't seen the Ninja in real life. He is the cheese!" Geoffry blinked. The principal rolled his eyes. "See, I warned you about the slang. Your bags will be picked up and sent to your room, so don't worry about them. Now off to science class - here's your timetable. Enjoy your stay in Norrisville!"
Slimovitz led Geoffry down the corridor and ushered him into a classroom and was gone. A female teacher with frizzy grey hair wearing a labcoat walked up to him. "Hello, I'm Mrs Driscoll and I'll be your science teacher during your stay in NHS." From behind her she rolled a skeleton into sight and 'made him talk'. "I'm Jerry Driscoll and I'll be your classroom companion!"
