Four months ago...Thor could not meet Sigyn's icy gaze as he entered the palace hall, Loki left behind and already placed in his holding cell.
"You bastard." She spat. If he were not the heir to the throne she would have struck the Thunderer with all the force her small frame would allow. Her blood was boiling beneath her skin as she stared up at the hulking Prince before her.
He ignored the insult. "You are not to see him." Thor had said in his deep baritone, his demeanor infuriatingly calm. The warning, however, was clear in his flashing storm colored eyes. To Hel with that.
"I'm sorry, I must've missed the part where you said you would be bringing him home in chains, like some kind of animal. Loki is your brother! What would possess you-!"
Thor cursed, dropping Mjnor to the floor with a loud, resonating boom. Sigyn credited herself for not yelping in surprise but the flinch and involuntary step back could not be suppressed.
The crowned Prince's massive form surged forward and with her pulse pounding in her ears, it took every bit of will power she had to keep still. "Do you think I wanted this." He growled, his face lined with frustration and sadness. "Do you think I did not use every ounce of leverage as heir to my fathers throne to keep my brother from those chains." The thunderer paused, reining himself in, and heaved a great sigh. "This is the best outcome I could convince my father to coincide with. My father and his council respect me enough to hear what I have to say but I am not King. In the end, my words mean very little." Thor's broad shoulders were slumped in defeat and his misery seemed to have aged him before her eyes. The carefree, jubilant Prince she'd always known seemed another person now.
Tears of frustration pricked her eyes as Sigyn knew she was wrong to lash out at him. Thor is just as upset as she, if not more so, but she couldn't help it. Loki was home-alive!- but she could not go and see him. "I'm sorry," Sigyn fidgeted with her sleeves, not looking at him. "Of course you did all you could for your brother, forgive me."
Thor made a dismissive gesture with his hand. He scowled down at the floor. "I hate it," he said softly. "I hate the thought of my little brother down there with the worst of the worst, where he does not belong, while I am up here unable to help him."
More tears threatened as you watched him pick up his hammer from the floor, idly twisting and turning it his hand. "However, I feel it may be best for him."
She started at him incredulously. "How is this in any way beneficial for him? Loki is condemned to the dungeons for the foreseeable future."
"Do not misunderstand me," Thor said quickly, a pleading look as he reached for you hand, engulfing it in his big calloused one. "I love my brother more dearly than anyone but you know what he is. He's arrogant, he's reckless, he's dangerous."
Sigyn ripped her hand from his. "Loki, 'reckless and dangerous'?" A moment of bitter humor stuck her and she scoffed. "From where do you suppose he learned that from?"
"Loki's actions are his own. They have nothing to do with me or anyone else."
A wave of sadness suddenly washed over her. All Loki wanted was to been seen as equal to his brother, the golden prince, who has always been treated with respect and held in great esteem by all of Asgard.. and Odin. But the Aesir are a proud people, prone to racism and bigotry. Loki should have known better. Shaking her head she thinks she may now understand some of Loki's anger.
Present
Sigyn sighed, disgusted, and began pacing her chambers.
She wondered if Heimdall would alert the guards if she ventured to the dungeons where Loki was held. What would happen to her if she did? She'd not only be directly disobeying the express order of the Crowned Prince, but of the Allfather himself.
After pacing for several more minutes, the light tap of her boots echoing slightly off the walls, Sigyn came to her decision. Focusing her mind, she shielded herself from Heimdall's ever-watchful gaze with her magic - a trick she had learned from Loki - and slipped out of her chambers, treading through the halls of the palace with light footsteps until she reached the dungeon hall.
"What are doing down here, m'lady?" asked one of the guards curtly. "You're not sup-"
"I have permission to be here." She said, eyes boring into the guard's. She could feel her power pulse within her very veins and, with a moment of concentration, the man's shoulders relaxed of all tension.
"Of course, m'lady." He said with a small bow.
Sigyn strode quickly down the hall, ignoring the jeers and whistles from the prisoners she passed, keeping her eyes fixed on her goal: a large steel door at the end of the hall. Behind this door were the solitary confinement cells. Most of them were uninhabited, so it shouldn't be difficult to find Loki's. Closing her hand around the handle she braced to push the heavy door open.. and hesitated. Not right of mind, Thor had said. Its a little too late to think about what that means, she was already here. Steeling herself, shoved the door open.
