The Civil War Girl

Fear surged throughout my body. I inhaled smoke, and exhaled it in a loud, wheezy cough. The sword in my hand shook hard. Tin cans, broken muskets, and the bodies of my fellow soldiers lay on the ground around me. The living men tried to shoot at enemy soldiers and jump over the large fallen tree in front of us. The ground shook under my feet, screams filling my ears. The bang threw me off balance. I fell to the ground. My fellow soldiers fell around me. One pointed at me and screamed. What? Had I been shot? Then he said it. My hat had fallen off. He knew my secret.

"SHE'S A GIRL!!" He yelled. I shifted backwards on my back, leaning my head on the large, fallen log behind me. I tried to push myself over it, but I couldn't, not with the huge gash on my left leg. The men surrounded me.

"I... I..." I stuttered, still struggling to get to my feet.

"How does she fight so well?" I heard someone ask.

Then I felt it. Rage. "So what if I'm a girl?" I found my strength then. I stood up, placing my hand on my best friend, Nick to hold me up. I clenched my large, swollen fists. "I fight just as well as you!"

Nick shook his head beside me. "Don't make such a fuss, Rose..." He whispered to me.

"NO! I will make a fuss!" Then I turned on my good leg, coming face-to-face with an enemy soldier.

"Girl?" He asked, stunned.

I narrowed my eyes. "Girl." I nodded, then I lunged at the man, impaling his chest with my shining sword. I turned back around to see all of my gawking 'friends.' But they weren't my friends. They were my enemies. They had judged me by my gender, instead of my skill, and I hated that more than anything.

Then I heard a bang too close to be real. I heard a crashing sound, cracking throughout my body, and the crunching of dead grass under someone's body. My body. A scream escaped my lungs and rang throughout the air. A bullet had pushed through the front of my Confederate uniform. I looked at Nick. He was angry now. Really angry. I heard a shot fired from his gun and watched the soldier who had shot me crash to the ground. He had been on my side! The hatred grew, and I watched it flare up in Nick's eyes. He ran to my side and bent down to me, shaking. "Please be okay." He whispered in my ear.

"We're wrong..." I said, barely loud enough to hear.

"About what?" He asked.

"About the war. W... We're on the wrong side." I breathed. "I mean, one of my own shot me. Leave me here, and go join the Union Soldiers."

"I won't leave you." He said.

"Run." I whispered. I felt my breathing slow down, my heart's blasting thumps grow farther apart. And then I shut my eyes, and fell asleep.
