Wednesday 20th January 1965
US Capitol
12pm
“I Lyndon Baines Johnson do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
After Lyndon gave his inaugural address Jack met him inside. “Congratulations Mr President.” Jack smiled shaking his hand.
“I still can’t help but think this should have been you.” Lyndon replied.
“If things only had happened differently.”
Lyndon nodded. “If you or the children need anything Jack, don’t be afraid to ask. Even if it’s to use Camp David for a weekend, I don’t mind.”
“Thank you Lyndon.” The two men hugged.
Jackie watched this from the White House. By the time Jack arrived back he was smiling. Jackie was still in disguise. He kissed her cheek. “I’ve waited so long for this day.” He smiled as he got into the limousine that was taking them to Wexford.
“Me either Bunny.”
After setting of for Wexford Jack put his arm round his wife, they could finally be together.
“Where do you fancy buying a house?”
“I was actually thinking, we could keep our houses in Hyannis and Florida and keep Wexford but maybe later this year we could buy an apartment in New York.”
Jack smiled. “That’s a great idea.”
She blushed and kissed his cheek. Clint was in the front. The agents that were still assigned to their detail were all trustworthy and would never say anything about Jackie’s existence.
Wexford
7pm
Jack and Jackie sat on the sofa snuggled together with the kids lying on the floor playing. “This is perfect.” Jackie whispered.
“It really is.”
The TV reporter was talking about the former President. “I guess we all expected we would be seeing President Kennedy for another four years but things change. I think what he did stepping down to look after his children after the death of his wife, is more honourable and admirable than anything else in the world. To give up your hopes and dreams I think we all wish President Kennedy the best for the future. Who knows we might see another Kennedy in the White House in a few years.”
Jack smiled. “I’m sure we’ll see Bobby there soon enough.”
Jackie giggled. “I certainly admire President Kennedy and everything he did for his family after Dallas.”
“I’m glad to know that.”
Jackie kissed him very deeply. “I’m never leaving you again.”
“Good.”
They stared deep into each other’s eyes. This was their new beginning.
