‘This is it Mr Daley. I’ve had it. You were on your last warning, and this is it. You CANNOT egg my car! Does that even sound REMOTELY ACCEPTABLE TO YOU? You’re luck I’m not pressing charges, but your time here has come to an end. Frankly, I’m glad to be rid of you.’ He dismissed me with a simple frustrated wave as he turned to face away from me.
I knew I was supposed to wait for him to call my parents and have them take me home, but I stormed through the reception, and left through the front door.
As soon as I was off school property I screamed in joy like a madman. The joy of leaving that place was just too much.
With nothing to do, I headed to my sister’s house, I doubt she was in and I couldn’t exactly go home now, or Ma would kill me. When I entered I headed straight for her version of a bar and grabbed some rum.
Underage drinking never killed anyone now did it?! I sighed as I switched on the TV and realised it was all day time television. Oh well, the rum can keep me company.
‘SETH. SETH MAN GET UP!’ I groggily opened an eye to see Adrienne’s green eyes glaring down at me. Sitting up, I realised that it was already like eight, and I wasn’t home yet. Slowly standing up I grabbed my school bag, all ready to leave.
‘So what is this? Just raid big sis when you feel like a drink yeah?’
‘Nah, I’m sorry Ade, kinda got expelled today. Ma’s gonna kill me, so I thought I’d have fun while I can’ She had narrowed her eyes at me, and it took me a few seconds to realise my mistake,
‘I mean Ava is gonna kill me’ she shook her head at me and walked away.
Calling Ava ‘Ma’ really irked her. She couldn’t understand how I could call anyone else mum, apart from our real mum. Since she was dead and all. I really couldn’t, to be honest. That’s why it was ‘Ma’ not ‘Mum’, ‘Mummy’ or ‘Mother’.
And I hadn’t really known my mum anyway. She died when I was three, with our dad too. But Ade was ten, so it was a lot for her. I grew up with Ava, but she grew up in a foster home, because she just couldn’t settle in a family. They’ve always kept us close and together though.
Suspecting that I wasn’t going to get a goodbye, I left and walked the twenty minutes to my house, the frosty evening air helping sober me a little before I get home.
I closed the front door as quietly as I could, hoping that the twins were already asleep so that she wouldn’t yell so much. Carefully I opened the living room door and saw her with her back facing away from me.
‘Hey Ma,’ I whispered pretty quietly
‘Seth. Where have you been? Adrienne’s I suppose? What is WRONG with you? Do you really want to ruin your life?’
She was so angry, and I guess she should be, but that didn’t make me any less pissed at being in trouble. As I began to speak in protest, she cut me off with a simple hand gesture, and handed me a brown envelope.
She headed towards the door and stopped, looking at me expectantly, waiting for me to open the envelope. Suspicion filled me as I slowly opened the envelope and it was an admissions booklet for ‘Rifton College’.
Ava was still looking at me expectantly so I replied her with a baffed look. What was this?
‘So Seth, you are gonna start there on Saturday. Well obviously it’s a boarding school so you’ll settle in over the weekend, then lesson’s start on Monday. Your uniform, I ordered it online so it’s coming tomorrow. I just you know looked at the sizes in your wardrobe so I ho--‘
‘Wait, wait, wait hold up. Boarding school?! What, why I mean I mean....’
‘Seth, voice down please. What do you want me to do? You get EXPELLED, you never take any of my punishments, and you just run off to your sister. And don’t even get me started about those kids you hang over. I’ve had enough of them coming to my house what kind of example would I be setting for the twins if this continued? This really is a last resort’
I swear I could kill someone right now. Some stuck up shit school, with a load of douches, oh great, right?
‘Yeah right Ma. I’m surprised you didn’t bust out some crap like it’s all for your own good’
She stepped out in front of me as I tried to storm out of the room,
‘Of course it is Seth, I only want the best for you’
‘Really? Yeah right. Cos it just seems like you just wanna get rid of the adopted one!’ as soon as it came out I regretted shouting at her, but it was too late now. I ran upstairs, slamming my door. Immediately I hit my bed, headphones in and music on, I shut out everything and everyone.
‘Seth… Seth’ someone lightly shook my shoulder, but I just couldn’t be bothered to open my eyes
‘WHAT!’
After a long pause of silence I turned, squinting, to look at the intruder in my room. A pair of widened grey eyes, brimming with tears stared back at me. Crap… I sat up straight and reached out to him.
‘Ah, Grant, I’m sorry, I’m just tired I didn’t mean to shout’
‘I… I just had a nightmare… I’m not scared, honest, I… I’
‘It’s okay, come here’ straightaway he sat down on the bed next to me, adjusting his glasses which kept slipping down the bridge of his nose. There was a calming silence which was almost… serene.
‘Seth, where you going?’
‘Huh, nowhere Grant, nowhere’
‘Well I heard mommy say you’re starting on Saturday? I heard it. Melanie heard it too’
‘Oh, I’m just going to a different school for a while. But it means I won’t live here all the time’ he gasped, and his eyes began to well up, ‘don’t… Don’t worry I’m gonna visit sooo much that it’ll seem like I never left!’ I smiled enthusiastically, which seemed to pacify for the time being.
‘Oh Seth, what does dopted mean?’
‘Huh?’
‘Dopted? You’re dopted right?’
‘Oh… you heard that. Well, it’s just… it’s kinda like… I mean… I just. Hmm, it means I didn’t exactly come from the same place as you and Melanie. But it doesn’t change anything at all. I’m your big brother.’
‘Course you are Seth!’
‘Alright, well, it’s late; you got school tomorrow so get some sleep okay.’ I crept back under the duvet, expecting Grant to go back to his room. Instead I felt the duvet being lifted up and a certain seven year old getting in the bed. Sighing, I pulled it back and tried to sleep, with him tossing and turning. After a while I think he thought I was asleep, whispering and muttering to himself.
‘Seth, don’t go. Don’t leave me. They gonna get me if you not here. They gonna get me’ the last thing I heard before I fell into the darkness of sleep.
