In our society, most of us have to work our way to the top. Some of us are born into their social standing.
However, in this story, the value of each and every person is decided long before they are born. By whom, it is not known.
Every baby is born with a number inked into their collarbone. The number is permanent and cannot be removed.
The luckier ones are born with a 7 or 8 etched in their skin. The less fortunate get a 1, 2 or 3. The highest number they know a person can have is a 9.
The lowest number anyone has been known to get is a 0.
The number on your collarbone is everything. You are your number. Your town is your number. Your social standing is a result of your number. Your job depends on your number. Your life is your number.
