Friday night parties were known to be the buzziest and hottest in Lagos. On that particular day, it wasn't any different, the same old routine; sweaty bodies grinding each other, young girls flocking married pot-bellied men, young boys competing on who could buy the most caskets of drinks, set of friends playing games and taking shots, and other clubbing activities.
Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, everyone but Femi. Clubbing used to be his lifestyle but he was getting tired of it. The girls whining on his thighs didn't interest him any longer, neither did the booze. He felt suffocated and was thinking of any activity that could replace the night clubbing which now enervated him.
"Femi, I don't get it, did you come here to mourn? Why are you carrying face up and down?" His friend Malik who sat opposite him with a slim girl on his laps asked.
"I don't know. Apparently, this doesn't interest me any longer." He waved his hands at the dance floor.
His other friend, Mike, let out a loud laughter, "Femi, tired of partying? That's like saying humans tired of breathing."
"C'mon, I'm not that bad. To be honest, I'm only here because you guys are." Femi argues.
"You are that bad and more. See, Malik, the only reason Femi is like this is he hasn't found the perfect girl for the night yet. You know Femi now, the best or nothing. He hasn't found his match, just give him time. He's not going to settle for anyhow girls." Mike said.
"Am I an 'anyhow' girl?" The girl sitting on Malik's laps asked and pouted her lips in a failed cute manner.
"Babe, you're not an 'anyhow' girl, you're my girl." Malik planted a kiss on her neck and she blushed slightly.
Poor girl. If only she knew she was going to get dumped the next morning.
"Mike, I have no words for you. I need to take a leak." Femi dropped his glass of vodka on the round stool and left their midst. He wasn't going to take a leak, he just needed some space and fresh air.He walked down the hall, occasionally bumping into some rough dancers and mumbling sorry. His eyes met with a beautiful girl's and she looked away immediately. She looked sad and fierce as she let herself to be lost in thoughts. He hated the fact that Mike was right but he had found his match for the night. Her beauty was enchanting and like a magnetic force, it drew him closer to her.
"A penny for your thoughts?" He asked with arms stretched out for a hand shake.
"No thanks." She rolled her eyes and left his hands hanging in the air.
He smiled. He had dealt with stubborn girls like her and always emerged successful. He enjoyed the sport they put him through.
"My bad, I absolutely have no rights to ask for that. I'm Femi." He said as he took a seat beside her. She shifted almost immediately and looked away.He smiled at the thought of her telling him to call her the next morning, after he had gotten what he wanted.
"So...are you with anyone here?" He asked.
"No! And I don't want to be. Why don't you all just get it!" She snapped and left the place. He batted his eyelids with mouth wide open as he tried to process what had just happened. He noticed the eyes staring at him suspiciously and he bowed his head in embarrassment. That girl was the devil. He regretted ever approaching her that night, he would have gone out straight for fresh air like he initially planned. He was however relieved that his friends weren't there to witness the incident. They would use it against him for life. They knew him as irresistible Femi, it should remain that way.
He knew he would be going home alone as he had had enough ladies' drama for the night. He stood up and left the place to get fresh air.
Taking a seat in the mini park, he picked up his phone and opened his unread texts. That would distract him from the annoying sound of lovers making out at the park. When would you be coming home? I need your help with something - Segun.
"Can I join you?" Someone asked. He looked up and saw Delilah herself.
"So you'd snap and make the whole world think I'm a rapist? I think not." He replied.
"Yeah, that's why I'm here." She sat beside him and he couldn't help but love the fragrance she was wearing.
"Look, I'm sorry about what happened earlier. I shouldn't have done that. I poured my anger on you and it's totally wrong. No human deserves to be treated that way. So....yeah, that's it."
"Umm ok." He said reluctantly and she stared at him wide-eyed. She didn't seem to like the turned tables.
"I'm going through a lot right now and I came here to clear out my head. It was kind of frustrating having horny guys looking for a night stand approach me every 2 minutes." She continued.
"Hey, hey. Hold on. Firstly I'm not interested in you, secondly, I'm definitely not horny. I saw you looking gloomy and I just wanted to lighten up your mood cause that's what I do." He lied.
"My bad. I'm sorry and thank you for wanting to lighten up my mood.. I should get going." She stood up.
"Wait!" He took her left hand.
"Yes?" She took her hands off his grip.
"Do you just like leaving people? I mean, we were having a conversation." He was beginning to love her company.
"I thought we were done. I came here just to apologize, sorry."
"I don't even know your name and the thing or things making you go through a lot."
"That, I can't and won't tell you but my name is Sola and I need to get going. I don't want to get home late."
"Ok Sola, can you do me the honors of letting me drop you home?" He knew what her answer would be but he tried anyways. He wanted to know more about the mysterious girl.
"I'm afraid not, thanks for the offer." She gave him a weak smile.
"Ok. Can I at least get your number?" He begged.
"I'm sorry, I can't give you ."
"C'mon Sola, I won't bite. I just want to get to know you better."
"Seriously? I don't want you or anyone else in the world to get to know me better cause I'm a great disaster."
"Shhhh be nice on yourself."
"Yeah, bye." She said and walked away.
He wanted to go after her but he had received enough shame for the night. He stared at her until the elegant mysterious lady was out of sight. He prayed in his mind to meet her again some day."Well, that's enough fresh air for the day." He sighed and went inside the club.
