Title from Oh, Calamity! by All Time Low
(Alex's POV)
"Sorry I'm a bit late," Lisa says when she finally rolls over to the door. I've been awkwardly waiting with roses for ten minutes. With her dad bombarding me with questions.
"It's okay," I smile and hand her the roses. She thanks me and puts them in a vase.
We decide to have a nice picnic on the hill. We find a place under a nice tree and set out the blanket. I get up and carry her bridal style so she can sit down. I lean her back against the tree and put the pillow there so it's more comfortable.
"Finger sandwiches?" I ask, pulling out the container. She nods and I hand her one. She nibbles it and laughs.
"Best finger sandwich I've ever had," she grins.
"Why thank you!" I exclaim. I hand her a plastic cup full of sparkling water.
"This is the most elegant picnic I've ever had," she says.
"Thank you?" I say, but it comes out more like a question.
"It's a good thing," she whispers.
"Oh! Thank you!" I grin. We clink our cups together.
After we finish, we watch the sun go down. It's actually quite beautiful.
Then something hits my mind.
"Jacky, look, the sun!" I point at the setting sun. The sky is a warm orange, red, pink blend. He pulls his arms around my waist. "It's so beautiful," I sigh, resting my head on his shoulder.
"Not as beautiful as you," he whispers. He kisses my temple and breaths against my neck, sending shivers down my spine.
"You're so cheesy," I mumble and continue to watch the sun lower below the horizon. He kiss my neck and then my cheek. I turn to stare at him. He smiles and kisses my lips. He scoots forward so he's facing me.
"I love you," he whispers softly. My heart pumps with love.
"I love you too," I answer, my cheeks feeling hot. We both lean towards each other for another kiss. This was passionate and loving. I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
I pull away, and we both take a second to breathe, our foreheads pressed against each other's.
"Alex, I swear, I'll always love you like I do right now," he says, his voice full of passion and care.
"I'll always love you too," I answer with ease. "Forever," I hold out my pinky. He smiles and we lock our pinkies together, sealing our promise.
I gasp at the memory. I look over at Lisa, still watching the sun.
I broke the promise.
But it's a promise I don't remember making. So it doesn't count, right?
The sun goes down completely, and now the sky is dark.
"We should get going," I murmur. I help her back to her house.
"Goodnight," I smile. I peck her lips as she rings the doorbell.
"Well, Alex. Thank you from the amazing date," she says. I nod as she wheels into her house.
I turn and start back to my house. I pull out my phone and see dozens of texts. I click my phone off without even reading them and walk into my house.
"How's was the date?" Mom asks.
"It was good," I smile. "The picnic idea was amazing."
"I try," she bats her eyelashes. I roll my eyes and walk to my room. Falling face-first into a pillow.
Jack: WINDOW
I jump. That's nice to see out of context. I walk to the only window in my room and look outside. I look straight as see Jack waving like an idiot. I lift the blinds out of the way. He writes something on a whiteboard.
How was the date? He tap the board and points. I look around and see a whiteboard and a dry erase black marker.
Damn how many times did we do this?
Good? I write and show him.
We used to do this
I figured
We did it because it just felt cool. We felt like spies or some shit like that. But I guess we still do it for some reason. He also drew a shrugging person.
Cool. I draw a face with sunglasses.
My phone is dead :(
Aw, poor Jack. He can't live without the internet.
He makes a face. Rude
I grin and open the window. I walk back to click on my stereo. I bring it to the window and play All The Small Things by Blink-182.
Jack grins and bobs his head along to the song.
"Hey Jack!" I call. He nods for me to continue. "You wanna come over?"
"Okay!" He says back. I look down at the two trees. I swear to god. He climbs down the tree next to his window. And then I finally see the ropes. Huh, apparently we did this a lot. He climbs up the tree next to my window and I help him in.
"We did this a lot, didn't we?" I ask, still laughing. He nods and sits on my bed. I decide to sit next to him.
I'm dating Lisa. I'm dating Lisa. Dating Lisa. Lisa.
Jack.
Jack wraps his arm around me.
"We used to watch the sunset every Saturday. Even if we weren't together. We'd still be looking at the same sun setting," he speaks thoughtfully.
"Do you miss it? I mean, everything we did together?"
"The good times we shared? Everyday. But I want you to live however you want now. I'm not going to hold you back."
"I wish I could remember everything. It feels like I'm missing out on my best life," I admit softly. Saying it out loud just makes it feel... Real.
He pats my shoulder. "Alex, it's okay to miss it. But don't let it consume your life. I want you to be happy," he offers me a gentle smile. One thing I learned about Jack is that his smile lights up the world like the sun. It just makes me feel better.
"Okay," I answer softly. I lay my head on his shoulder. His breath hitches.
Something in me feels like I'm cheating on him with Lisa. But another part of me feels like I'm cheating on Lisa with Jack.
So now I'm conflicted.
Do I listen to my past self? Or my present self?
