THIRTEEN || FALLON AND VERONICA LEAD A JAILBREAK

"....And I need to get him out." Veronica finished, Fallon completely silent across from her at the bar.

"Okay, let me get this straight: You want me and my crew to help you bust ol' Carrot Top out of jail because he's being forced to fight other inmates and is definitely gonna die if we don't?" Fallon asked flatly, and Veronica nodded rapidly, reaching for Fallon's hands, which Fallon hesitantly let her take.

"Please, please, please help me, Fal. I'll pay you back, I promise." She begged, and Fallon sighed. "You're churned up about this, Veronica, I can tell. And I can also tell you that I've been in similar situations. We'll do it for free."

Veronica's face crumpled with relief as tears filled her eyes. "Thank you so much, Fallon! You have no idea--"

Fallon shrugged with a grin on her face. "We're friends, and I help my friends. Let me call my best Serpents, and then we can get talking."

Twenty minutes later, Dallas, Dixie, the Twins, Betty (who brought Kevin), and a very reluctant Reggie were gathered in La Bonne Nuit, Fallon lounging on a barstool and sipping a bottled soda as Veronica addressed the group.

"Thank you all for coming. As you all know, Archie's stuck behind bars. His life is in danger. Before we get started, I want to acknowledge that, yes, we are flying by the seat of our pants here, but as much as possible, we must follow the plan. The slightest deviation, and Archie could wind up dead."

She turned expectantly to Fallon, who stood and walked over to the map on one of the round tables, marked up with pen and highlighter.

"We'll need a distraction to disorient the guards and hide Archie's play for the grate, something we can sneak into the location easily, that won't arouse suspicion, something we make ourselves." Fallon said, and turned her attention to Devereaux, who was a master demolitionist after many years screwing around in high school chemistry labs and many suspensions.

"Dev, can you make a few smoke grenades?" Fallon asked, and the Graves brother smiled wickedly. "It'd be my pleasure. If that bastard Norton is still there, it'd make me happy to ruin his day."

"As for the getaway route, I want you positioned for the pickup here, Blondie. If you stick to the woods, their cars shouldn't be able to follow you." Fallon said, pointing out a spot on the map. "Yes ma'am." Betty replied, and Fallon smiled. "Okay, y'all, a few more things, and then we can go get Carrot Top."

Just as Fallon was about to finish up, the thudding of boots was heard on the stairs.

"Oh Veronica?" A voice called, and Fallon's blood went cold as she recognized the rasping tones of Penny Peabody, and her lip curled as the Ghoulie came into view. "You thought about my offer ye--oh! Well, well, well, what do we have here?"

"Hello, Penny." Fallon hissed, and Penny smirked. "Serpent."

"This is a private staff meeting--" Reggie started, and Penny threw back her head and laughed. "Oh, please. You think I don't know an attack plan when I see one? Question is, what is it exactly you're planning on doing?"

"How did you even get down here anyway, rat? Leave." Fallon spat, and Penny's eyes drifted to the bottle in her hand.

"What, you gonna break a bottle over the top of that pretty bar and shiv me just like that kid you killed at the Wyrm?"

Fallon's stomach dropped as the air went out of the room.

"Fallon?" Betty asked quietly. "What does she mean?"
