Letter From Westly To Buttercup

Dear Buttercup

Dear Buttercup,

Yes, it is I, Westley, and no I am not dead. I know it has been a long four years since we last talked and I regret that it had to be that way. I am sure you are confused, but do not worry for I will explain.

When the Dread Pirate Roberts attacked our ship he spared my life and no I am not lying, it is the truth – he spared my life. It was my description of your beauty that spared my life. He took me aboard his ship a made me part of his crew. They taught me how to fight and use a sword and so much more. Every night when I went to bed Roberts would always say 'Good night Westley, good work, sleep well, I'll most likely kill you in the morning'. For three years he said that.

We became friends and then one day he took me into his cabin and he sat me down. You see he had grown so rich that he wanted to retire. He told me 'I'm not the Dread Pirate Roberts. My name is Ryan. I inherited the ship from the previous dread Pirate Roberts, just as you'll inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from wasn't the real Dread Pirate Roberts either. His name was Cummerbund The real Roberts has been retired 15 years and living like a king in Patagonia.'

We sailed ashore and took on entirely new crew. He stayed on for a while as first mate all the while calling me Roberts. Eventually he left the ship and I have been Roberts ever since.

You see, it is the name that inspires the fear. No one would fear the Dread Pirate Westley. I have now been the Dread Pirate Roberts for a year and things must stay this way for a while longer. It is unfortunate I know but I must gain enough of a fortune to keep us safe for the rest of our lives.

Is everything clear? Although you will never read this I am sure you will understand that I cannot contact you in any way. I must keep my true identity hidden until I am able to retire. So when I have finished writing this letter I will be sure to burn it.
