Gemma settled down opposite her brother in law. After he'd had the affair that effectively ended his marriage, things had been frosty between them but after Nat's death they'd gradually slipped back into the banter and easy affection they'd always had. Gemma had been impressed at how Fletch had turned his life around and became the kind of father that he never had and if he was honest hadn't been when his kids were very little. Yes she wanted details because she was a huge gossip but more than that she wanted details about what was happening with this woman and how it might affect her nieces and nephews. She was fiercely protective of them and she didn't care who this Jac was or how much Fletch cared for her, if there was a chance that the kids could be hurt she'd do everything in her power to stop that happening.
"Ok. Go"
"Well it was a good call making me go round last night. We finally admitted how we feel about each other"
"Go on" Gem encouraged
"Well I suppose the good news is we love each other"
"And the bad news?"
"There's not really any bad news it's just....I'm worried that we got caught up in the moment, in the bubble we've created and now we have to work out how things are going to work with kids, work, colleagues, friends"
"So you didn't sit up all night talking this through?"
"Erm well not exactly" he chuckled "I honestly did go round to talk but kinda couldn't help myself when I saw her"
"So?"
Fletch cleared his throat "when we woke up this morning I had my arm round her. One of our ground rules for this was not to sleep over. I thought she was gonna go mad but she didn't. Just said that it wasn't working anymore and we quickly discovered that neither of us thought it was working because we both wanted more"
"Well that's great isn't it. It's what you wanted"
"Yes, yes I mean I had to tell her how I feel and I can't tell you how happy it makes me that she feels the same but this all happened half an hour ago and we haven't worked out where we go from here. I was thinking about it on the drive home. It's huge. I don't know how we're going to pull this off"
"But you're willing to try"
"Of course. Just don't want it to blow up in our faces"
"Fletch you're panicking without any concrete reason as far as I can see. You need to speak to her and establish a whole new set of ground rules"
"Yeah you're right. I'm not going to say anything to the kids until I speak to Jac about 'us'"
"How do you think they'll take it?"
"Honestly? I don't know. I mean she comforted you have Evie when she was upset about that waste of space that is my father but she's not generally the maternal type. She always said that she couldn't be a mother to my kids"
"Just make sure your family don't get caught in any cross fire or end up emotionally involved with someone who is either not reciprocating the feeling or will bailout at the first sign of trouble" she squeezed vhis arm"because you're all too important to me to let me see you suffer like you did when Nat and Raf died. You don't need another loss"
"I know. That's why it's important that I get this right"
"You deserve some happiness too though Fletch"
He took her hand in his "Thanks Gem" he said, his voice thick with emotion
