We had been walking for about half an hour, and the sun blazed right into my eyes. Cadet warned me over and over to beware the forest, because we would have to enter it. "Don't be such a wuss," she said. "I'm sure a couple people survived in here."
"A couple?!" I said, and she punched me playfully in the arm.
"I'm kidding," she said. "Now stop groaning and hurry up."
In front of me, I saw the forest. Honestly, it didn't look half bad. All of the trees were a crisp green and the forest floor had leaves scattered around it.
"Don't let it trick you," she said. "Trust me, it isn't as pleasant as it seems." I half believed her, but half of me was suspicious. I had just met this girl, and she treated me like a brother.
She pulled out her curly hair from the ponytail on the back of her head and the curls fell down her back. "So the beasts can't pull me away as easily." When she saw my horrified face, she mumbled. "Just kidding." But I could tell she was lying. We looked at the woods once more and she sighed.
"I sure hope we survive," she said.
"Yeah, me too," I muttered, but I didn't know how much grief the forest would give me, or her.
