When we reached the edge of the lake, there was a boat.
"This is helpful," said Cadet. "Now all we have to do is get all the way over there." She gestured at the other side of the lake, and mumbled as she got in. "Honestly, couldn't that darn mountain be closer?"
It almost flipped over when I shuffled in, probably due to my lack of balance. "C'mon Nova," I said, waving my hands in the air to get her attention.
"Wait," she yelled. "I'm trying to find out what creature scratched this tree."
"That won't help you much when we're all dead," Cadet said, annoyance sprinkling her voice.
Nova ran over to the boat quicker than if seen her run. "Let's go," she said. We all sat still. "Does anyone know how to work a boat?"
"I do," I said, and with a push on the land with the paddle, we were off.
"Maybe we'll meet some nice sea creatures in here," Nova said, gliding her hand across the glassy water.
"I hope not," Cadet said. "They'd probably invite us to dinner."
"Well, that doesn't sound too bad," I said. "I'm pretty hungry, we've been walking for ten hours straight, I think."
"We'd be the main course you moron," she said, and we went silent.
At the sides of the boat, the water started bubbling. The bubbles spread until they surrounded the whole boat, and I could see fins coming out of the water. There were three, no four. Was that another one below the boat? The bottom of the boat was scraped with some of the fins, and Cadet pulled out a sword.
"Guys," she said. "I think we have company."
