The footsteps grew louder, and I heard hissing and growling behind me. "They're a hundred feet away," Cadet said. If only I had gotten to know her better.  If only I'd learned how to survive a dragon attack. But there was no time for worry, I had to face this, alone or not.

"Seventy feet," she said, and I could hear her voice shaking.  Probably due to the rumbling earth below us.

"Fifty feet," her voice grew fainter in my terrified ears.

"Thirty," she started playing with her hair.

"They've reached us," she said. I couldn't hear a hiss, or even a footstep.  The ground had stopped rumbling, and everything was silent.

But, I knew that they weren't gone.  Slowly, I forced my head to look up, and my eyes met glassy grey ones. "These are blind," she said. "We still have a chance." The words filled me with hope.

The slinky creature crawled down the tree and opened its large mouth, hyper extending it so far that my own mouth hurt. It let out a smoky substance, and Cadet pulled me down so that I was laying on the ground. "That's how it tracks us," she said. I tried to respond, but she hit me in the head. "Shut up," she said. The beast heard her, and ran on its small legs like a reptile towards us.  A figure caught my eye in the trees, and it swooped down to the ground and crushed the dragon's skull.

"I'm Nova," the figure said, extending her hand.

"I'm Cadet," she said, taking Nova's hand and almost crushing it in the handshake.

"Ouch," Nova said, her blue hair draping down her back.

"Our families are dead," Cadet said. "We are journeying to-"

"The mountain," Nova said. "So am I." We all looked at the dead dragon. "You could use me, I've killed these my whole life.  I mean, I used to live in these woods."

"Come with us," I said, and she nodded. I knew that we couldn't face this alone.
