Adam awoke to confusion. He heard muted voices, and it felt like a drum stick was beating on the back of his head. He remembered David falling, and Blue standing there...then a sharp pain. He shot up, much to the shock of the girls. They screamed, and Blue quickly cowered before him and fell to her knees.
"Alpha, I'm so sorry! We heard noises outside, and we thought someone was trying to hurt us," Blue explained, never looking Adam in the eye as she cowered before him. Adam didn't pay attention, his eyes searching the room for his mate. He quickly found her, sitting beside David. She was looking at him nervously, her hands in the middle of wrapping a bandage around David's unconscious head. Adam reached up to see that someone had bandaged his own forehead. He hoped it had been Mila who had applied it.
"Why aren't you taking care of your own mate?" He turned to Olive, who was sitting in the corner. Unlike Blue, she dared to look him in the eyes. He was the Alpha, but he technically had no power over her.
"I'm not particularly happy that he decided to wander around uninvited outside Mila's house." Olive explained. Adam couldn't really refute that point. It was creepy what they had done. That didn't mean he was happy to see Mila taking care of him.
"If I may be so bold...why were you wandering around her house?" Blue asked hesitantly. She was careful not to use the words "sneaking around". Adam cleared his throat. He couldn't afford to lose face in front of his mate. He was supposed to be the strong, intimidating Alpha. Based on the reaction of the girls in his high school, women liked that.
"I was concerned about the new person in our town. I wanted to make sure she wasn't a threat." He said, confidence in his tone. He was surprised he had found a good excuse.
"You wanted to make sure...that I wasn't a threat?" Mila asked, her eyebrows scrunched together. Adam almost didn't hear her words, he was so focused on how adorable she looked when she did that. He cleared his throat again.
"Uh. Yes. I've got...certain responsibilities to this town, and I just wanted to make sure that you weren't going to cause any trouble." Outside, his face and posture was calm. Inside, he was jumping up and down. This was his first real conversation with his mate!
"Oh, okay. So instead of talking to me when we met inside the ice cream shop, you decided to stalk my home? And bring along my best friend's mate while you did it? That seems normal." Mila refuted. To be honest, she didn't know if it was normal or not.
"Well, you didn't exactly give me the chance to talk to you inside the ice cream shop. You kind of ran away," he said. He realized that his cool composure had started to crack, so he straightened his back and stared her down.
"Oh yeah, I remember! That was right after your friend here beat up another guy in public, right?" Adam opened his mouth, but then shut it again. She nodded contemplatively. "Yeah. I can definitely see why you'd think I was a threat." She said.
Adam's eyebrows furrowed in frustration. He wasn't used to people talking back to him so blatantly. What sucked even more was that she was completely right.
"Tell me again why we can't call the police?" Mila asked, turning to Blue. Blue's face was already pale from the way Mila was talking to him, but her face was completely devoid of color as she asked the next question.
"Well, uh...he's the Alpha. He can kinda do what he wants." Blue explained.
"Alpha? Is that, like, the head of the pack?" Mila asked, guessing based on Blue's response to him.
"Wait, you know about werewolves?" Adam interjected. He couldn't help but notice that Mila's hands hadn't moved from David's head. It would seem that Olive had noticed that too. Her eyes were fixated on David.
