One spade two spade
Three spade, four;
I'll take the flush that
You were hoping for.
We'll gather people
And place seats all around
We'll waste all our money
And not regain a pound.The people will be laughing
With their drinks in hand,
They'll complain about their lives,
And assume we understand.
They'll joke about their dreams,
Derisive thoughts galore,
And we'll forget that we've forgotten
What we're fighting for.Then they'll all be quiet,
And whisper all their doubts
With a quiet tone that can be heard
More than even a shout;
And we'll sit quietly there
Taking all their words in
Because we've been like this all our lives
And we hear but do not listen.
I'll pretend to care,
And you'll pretend, too,
And we'll both believe
That we've nothing left to lose;
I'll deal the hand
And we'll play our cards.
As we both pretend
That things didn't fall apart.
