clang. crash. snap. "shit!"
laughter erupted from the girl sitting in front of the catastrophic scene. angela ziegler, overwatch's head medical scientist, their angel, had ever so ungracefully fallen into a shelf that had probably taken hours to build. in seconds, surrounding a certain blonde, it had all crumbled down.
"don't just sit there, do something!" angela laughed out in an airy swiss accent. the woman looked tired - this 'secret project' (that y/n had found out rather easily) had taken around three and a half days of endless work and around a thousand cans of energy drinks to complete. the only casualty was angela's sanity.
"all i can do is sit, you're highly overestimating my capabilities." y/n replied jokingly. the handicapped woman rolled forward, holding her hand out to fish the angel out of the ruins of the ikea shelf. "yeah, yeah. thank you from the peanut gallery."
y/n had to crane her neck to look at angela, sitting back in the chair. "go get some rest, ok? you're looking more like you crawled out of hell than ascended from heaven." the comment caused angela to roll her eyes. she already had other doctors supervising the half-cyborg in the other room - she overworked herself. "but what about you? i think this is the final breakthrough we-" y/n knew exactly what she was talking about. cybernetic replacements for her spine and legs. she wanted to walk around again, desperately. the risk factor of the surgery was so high... she didn't want to put gabriel through more stress.
"angela. i'll be fine." y/n replied, finally sending the doctor to get some well deserved sleep.
she, after making sure angela made it to her room, rolled out into the gibraltar headquarters. it was quiet at this time of night. everyone was asleep or on a mission, there was no in between. but she was always here, waiting on the day she'd go back out in the field.
she soon made it to a certain balcony, one where she could look out at the stars perfectly. times like these were the only ones where she didn't feel so small. so... out of place.
the peak of the omnic crisis hadn't served y/n l/n well. her spine was almost shot out entirely, miraculously only leaving her legs paralyzed. angela had said that she was lucky to be alive. gabriel reyes was lucky to have only been scraped when she jumped in front of him. mentally, he hadn't done so well for the hours she was in surgery. he knew he shouldn't had cleared his fiancé, the love of his life, for such a dangerous mission. but he did, and it cost her everything he thought she loved about living.
she could only describe being in a wheelchair as watching the world go by around her and not being able to do a thing about it. she couldn't stop time, couldn't slow anything down - but she wouldn't dream of reversing her actions.the stargazer was only pulled out of her thoughts when she felt arms wrap around her shoulders, the scent of chestnuts and vanilla hitting her nose. a smile instantly spread across her features as she leaned her head back into the man's chest. "thought i'd find you out here, mi mariposa." a soft chuckle escaped y/n's lips at the comment. "you didn't think to check morrison's room first?" she teased, earning a laugh from her fiancé. "don't give him any ideas. rumor has it he's always watching, that he has eyes absolutely everywhere." laughter followed the comment from both sides of the couple. "that some new shit jesse's feeding you?"
he was wrong: he was what she loved about living. she'd stay in this chair for the rest of her life if he could be by her side.
it was moments like these that both gabriel and y/n cherished the most;
the calm in the eye of the storm.
